  • Purchased more than 5 DVDs at a single time, not including bargain bin stuff.
  • Owns a significant portion of the output of a single director, actor, or studio (Disney, etc.)
  • Has physically organized their collection (alphabetically, etc.) and/or has entered it in a database.

I am sure there would be other qualifications, as well, but I can't think of any right now.
  • Held off purchasing Farscape until they can release a version with some special features.

If you've ever consciously considered how to make your collection better in a way that didn't involve mindlessly making purchases, such as chasing down a particular DVD or removing unworthy titles.

Yep.

Of course!

Mmmmm....maybe. Not often as there's usually a used or bargain disc in there somewhere

2 words: Gary. Oldman.

Loosely alphabetical so I can find things (they've accumulated up to around 200 or so since 1998, or around 2-3 a month) Do I need a 12 step program?

I think it's more of a mindset. I do collect Snoopy, so I was trying to see where those 2 things differ. I don't view the DVDs as object to be shown off or admired - their function is to play the movie and entertain me. Chucking the tapes for disc is easy as I didn't have many VHS and know that media to be unreliable with age. I don't buy "must have" DVDs that are considered classic or otherwise considered to be a "staple" item. I don't buy part of a series be it actor, director or issuing company (such as Criterion) just to have "the complete set". As much of an Oldman fan as I am, a couple of the films just were not re-watchable for me, hence no DVD. I think if I collected, I'd have those "just because". I don't have the "ultimate" editions of all the DVDs because I have no interest in some of them in that depth. Others I do because I just love the film and find the extras fascinating.
I don't think it's a set number, though. More of an attitude

I think the first time you post "No OAR = No Sale" seriously... might be a good sign that you're on your way to being a collector

When people come to your house, see your DVD's and think you are crazy for having so many.

Mine never came. As usual, I've been left out of the cool clubs.

I think whoever shows a passion for DVDs with a goal in mind of consistently buying the releases should be considered a collector.

How about when you quote a line from a DVD you own on a DVD forum.

My sister on the other hand... grr..... she cant take care of anything.. and it pisses me off when she watches my dvds and gets her dirty fingerprints all over them lol. some of you guys might find this weird but i haven't watched about 35% of my dvds since i buy a whole lot each month its hard to keep up. Hmmmm hopefully this spring break ill be able to catch up on a lot.

When you've bought more than one DVD that you intend to keep.

Simple.

I define a "collector" is someone who buys things, anything, that they don't necessarily and most probably don't need.

For example, the OP said he buys 20 DVDs a month. My God! That would be a huge month for me, as I only buy at most 10 a month and that's a rarity. However after a little over 3 years of collecting, I have 400 titles, of which probably 30% or so are TV sets.

Notice that I said can be considered a collector not automatically are considered a collector.

So far this year in less than 3 months I've purchased over 150 DVDs. In a typical year, I buy close to 400 DVDs.

I have 1600 or so. I am running out of space. But I just love the darn things. Maybe I am not a collector but I have an addiction.

You might be a DVD collector if...

You know what date Friday is because its 3 days after Tuesday.

You pick up a DVD at Best Buy and wonder if you could get it cheaper online.

You roll your eyes and smirk at people buying fullscreen.

You frantically search for a DVD with a perfectly mint slipcase.

You have a back up savings account made just for Deep Discount's 20% off sale.

You have joined Columbia House multiple times.

You're usually very careful pulling off all the stickers off a case but sometimes you gotta use goo-be-gone.

You know what Criterion is.

You always buy the Special Edition.

You skip eating out because that money could go to more DVDs.

Your paychecks are measured in DVDs.

You frequent the bargain bins even though you know the movies suck but end up leaving with a few titles anyway.

The mailman knows your hobby even though he's never met you.

You've memorized your credit card number.

You have accounts with at least 12 different online DVD e-tailers.

You've shared the love.

You are disappointed at Christmas time when you receive fullscreen DVDs.

You've got Star Wars, your life is now complete but yet you still buy more.

That's me definitely especially when it comes to memorize my credit card number (plus the 3 digit code).

Haha it's sad but true. I'm probably the only college kid showing up on my campus with a brown paper bag containing my lunch. But when it comes down to it, bringing my own lunch saves me about $25 or so a week that I was spending at the on-campus restaurants. If I was doing this to actually save money, I'd be a smart kid. But I'm just doing it so I can spend more.

Yup!
You frantically search for a DVD with a perfectly mint slipcase.
Definately!

You have a back up savings account made just for Deep Discount's 20% off sale.

I think my tax returns money will go to this.

You're usually very careful pulling off all the stickers off a case but sometimes you gotta use goo-be-gone.
Is there any other reason to have Goo-Gone?

You know what Criterion is.
Love 'em!

Only if the price/features ratio is there.

Your paychecks are measured in DVDs.
Oh yes!

You frequent the bargain bins even though you know the movies suck but end up leaving with a few titles anyway.
Occassionally..

The mailman knows your hobby even though he's never met you.
Possibly, but those packages from DDD are pretty non-descript.

You've memorized your credit card number.
Who hasn't?

You have accounts with at least 12 different online DVD e-tailers.
More than likely.

You are disappointed at Christmas time when you receive fullscreen DVDs.
I give my family specifics, so that would never happen.

You've got Star Wars, your life is now complete but yet you still buy more.
My collection will never be complete!

One, but you have to place it on a very big bookcase all by itself! Think of it like when you bought baseball cards and those plastic sleeves in the binder!

My wife keeps telling me it's not the quantity but the quality.

Think she meant my 350 DVDs?

It's a collection if you think it is. Besides why do care what other people think?

She passes that comment again, agree with her and say "and that's why I have the best 350 DVDs of the millions out there."

She's right, but she probably doesn't know how much good stuff is out there.
