Do you occasionally buy two dvds of the same title?
 

Anyone do this occasionally?


Whenever the Disney Platinum editions come out, I always buy two copies.


They might be worth money down the line (yeah right they manufacture a million copies so when they do go out OOP, you won't have trouble finding them probably)

No... and I don't expect I ever will.

No, if I did this then I'd really be broke, plus I've already run out of room as it is!

However, I did consider buying another Donnie Darko theatrical cut DVD, as I fear it may go OOP and if something happens to my existing copy, I couldn't live without the theatrical cut...

Never have, I don't think, unless one was planned for a gift or something.
There's enough DVD's that will drop like a rock in value, that it's not worth the extra expenditure [to me] to get the one that ends up increasing.

Unless you're doing this because it's your hobby (trying to guess which DVDs will be worth $20.00 extra bucks on eBay some day) it's not worth it, especially with major releases. You'd be better off buying 2 of every Criterion release-- at least they've got a proven resale track record.

The only time i can remember doing this is when i got Scarface packaged together with Fast and the Furious and then i bought the Scarface Gift set a few weeks later.I gave away the first copy though.

I started doing this when the Disney "Limited Issue" DVDs were first coming out way back. I figured once everybody started getting DVD players there would be a pretty good demand for them. It seems though that one out of every two were reissued. The other ones I sold off at the right time and made probably a 200% profit (keeping in mind I bought them back in the "coupon era").

I think I still have a Jungle Book and Peter Pan squirreled away. Since then I've decided there's better things to do with my money. That $30 profit per DVD took like 4 years.

I don't really have that much storage space in my apartment so I usually just buy one copy and flush the other 20 bucks down the toilet to save on space.

It is not worth it...Due to the fact that Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast, etc are OOP and selling well on ebay, everyone is buying The Lion King, Bambi, Aladdin. I predict those will not be such a great investment.

The only time that I ever did this was when the Reservoir Dogs SE came out. I bought a Mr. Brown cover for myself and a Mr. Blonde cover to get autographed by Michael Madsen.

I will occassionally buy more than one copy of a title if I think that it has good resale value.

I don't recall ever doing this at the same time (if it wasn't a gift). I have certainly repurchased a couple of titles, mainly "double dipping" but once I found a copy of Criterion Hard Boiled after it was OOP so I picked that up.

When reanimator was OOP and impossible to find I placed multiple orders that all went to backorder. All of the sudden a few popped up and I got two copies. Same was true of Halloween LE, I bought two after it was OOP from 800.com. Sold one at cost to my sister.

can someone explain to me why disney for example discontinue their new DVDz like the new Lion King Boxsed set? WHAT'S THE REASON??????! i mean i know that almost every single DVD out thers happen to be outta stuck or OOP but thats after a long time..

Only once. I grabbed an extra copy of Mickey Mouse in Black and White vol 1. It wasn't for any kind of investment but for trade bait.

I do but only if it's a title I picked up from another region. And then only, if there is a change in the quality of the transfer and or added materials.

Only if I see something that I already know is worth more money. A couple of weeks ago, I found 2 copies of Shawshank LE (with book and soundtrack) at Best Buy for $35. I know they sell on Ebay for +$50, so I bought them. I bought a copy of LOTR:FOTR EE w/bookends at Best Buy a few months ago for about $40 (even though I already had a copy) because I knew the bookends alone were selling on Ebay for $60 - $70.

Only once. I went to a store a few years ago and picked up like 4 copies of Hard Boiled Criterion Edition. I knew at that point it was worth some dough though, so that's the only reason I did it.

Only once. Got the R-2 version of "Spirited Away" because it was still going to be months or a year before the R-1 version came out. When the R-1 version came out I bought that one too. I did not sell the R-2 version though, I still have both of them.

There's only 1 film that I own two copies of on DVD.

That's Battle Royale (the NTSC Tartan Region 0 edition).

I let someone borrow it (because I'm a dumbass) who ended up moving away, so I ended up buying another copy, however that person ended up giving me back the DVD after he moved when visiting family in Vegas; so now I have two copies of it on DVD. Both in perfectly good condition.

Ditto, here. I've had a few other instances of buying duplicates for profit.

Ummmmm... no. Not like you're describing. That sounds a bit silly to me, with the constant string of re-releases. I imagine that more than half the time, you hang onto these '2nd DVDs' for a while, and then they're worth less (or basically the same) as you paid for them. Seems like a waste of time and storage space to me.


I do, however, occasional get two different DVDs of the same title... if the 2nd version does not have everyone on the 1st edition, but instead offers other interesting stuff.

For example, Universal DTS discs vs. Collector's Editions (Apollo 13, 12 Monkeys, Dragonheart). Or Anchor Bay's MARTIN vs. Lion's Gate. Or the Criterion Robocop and Silence of the Lambs vs. the MGM editions.

But I keep those for my own enjoyment. Not in the hopes of getting rich one day. :)
