Box set if that is the way it was purchased. That is the way it is going to be displayed on the shelf so it makes sense to me to list the whole box.

As far as padding collections, who cares? These are our collections and whatever way of listing it works for you is fine. This is supposed to be fun. :)

Man that is tempting. I may do a list like that just for heck of it. I doubt I will ever get all 100, but it would be neat to see where I stand.

By box set.

I only put the box set. At first, I did all the titles, but I realized that it didn't really matter. It's mostly for insurance purposes so that in case of fire or theft, I can have them inventoried.

Yeah, I love putting various little sets together. I think it's the old sports card collector in me shining through. I mainly do it with directors (trying to track down everything they've done...Scorsese, the Coens, and so forth). However, a few months ago I started trying to purchase every Academy Award winning Best Picture. Since so many of those are also on the AFI list, I'm probably going to put that one together once (and if) I ever finish the Oscar collection. I should be left with only another 25 titles or so in addition to the Best Picture lis tand what I've already got.

I like the Oscar set, though, because once you've caught up, you only have to worry about 1 new title every year. So your collection is never officially done, but it's not as hectic and expensive to keep up with as, say, a Criterion collection would be.

I think I know why. DVDAF tells you how many DVD entries you have, AND the number of movie titles as well. DVDProfiler just lists each entry (including a box set) as a single title. So, if you bought a box set with say, 8 movies, DVDAF would count those as 8 separate titles in the titles listing, whereas DVDProfiler would only list it as one. If a friend of yours had the same collection you had, but with the difference being that he bought all of the titles in the box set separately instead of the box set like you did, according to DVDProfiler he would have 7 more titles than you!

I list the box set. I'm glad you started this topic. This brings up a couple of pet peeves of mine as far as DVDs go. People who list the Brazil Criterion DVD seperately, and people who list the box set but also list the titles individually.

Again, why should this matter? Why is this an actual pet peeve? Why should this concern anyone?

I like putting the box set and then the individual titles right under the set title - especially if the titles in the set have different spine numbers (ie Criterion. This can also be worked in for Brazil as it actually does have different spine numbers.), because it seems more complete

3 questions in a row all asking the same question, maybe pet peeve was too strong of a word? Didn't mean to get you all riled up there. None of it really matters. I just think it looks bad seeing Brazil listed individually. The real movie is the director's cut. Never seen the Love Conquers All version, don't want to. And the Production Notebook shouldnt even count. Not to mention that is one of the best looking boxes.
As for listing titles boxed and individually, comes across as a feeble attempt to make it look like you have more than you do. cmon, for example...whats the point of listing the james bond box set plus all the individual titles seperately. ditto for the monty python flying circus set. either or.

There's one big flaw with listing them as boxsets, it screws up the genre viewer. For example, the entire Hitchcock Signature Collection (9 films) is listed under film noir, despite only 2 films in the set actually being noirs. Then the Gangsters Set is not on the list despite White Heat being a film-noir. It's somewhat misleading; if a friend or someone wants to see what film noirs I have, it falsely depicts some films as being film-noirs and omits other ones from the category.

Well if you post on their message boards pointing this out, I'm sure they'll correct it. They might even add a "Boxed Set" under the genre classifications. Who knows.

I agree wholeheartedly. I even submitted the current picture they have for the boxed set, because scrolling through my collection, I always got bothered when I saw the "51.1" disc pictured as the boxed set cover. I love, love, love the Brazil set's presentation.

If you have subfolders by genre, I've found that it often makes a lot more sense to list individual titles since there are instances when the set will include several genres. For example, the recent Cary Grant Signature Collection includes a war movie (<i>Destination Tokyo</i>) along with several comedies, a Marilyn box set can include musicals, thrillers and comedies.

By box sets in a subfolder named Director Box Sets.

I list them by the box. Simplier that way. I use DVDProfiler for my main database and there I list them by box and individually.
