is it a bootleg? and should i leave a neg, or try to get my $ back if it is a bootleg?

wewantflair 03-04-05 02:30 PM

Yup - DVD9 means bootleg.

Snowmaker 03-04-05 02:31 PM

Did it even have DTS?

kornboy 03-04-05 02:32 PM

idk i dont have a home theater system..

bboisvert 03-04-05 02:33 PM

Yes, that's a bootleg. The DVD-9 symbol pretty much tells you right there.

Contact the seller and arrange for a refund (especially if it was advertised as the R1 edition with the correct picture/UPC). If you get a refund, I definitely wouldn't neg, but a Neutral comment explaining that you received a bootleg but a prompt refund is appropriate... to warn other buyers.

If he refuses to refund, take it up with eBay/PayPal. You got an item that was materially different than advertsed.

phr33k 03-04-05 02:33 PM

That's a bootleg.

Does it help to post who was the seller so that we don't buy from them.

cultshock 03-04-05 03:11 PM

Sorry, but that cover just screams Asian bootleg.

You could probably get your money back, especially if you paid with Paypal and threatened to take it up with them. The guy probably gets away with it enough, selling to unknowledgeable buyers, that he can afford to not make waves and give refunds to the few people that actually call him on his merchandise.

vegasbaby 03-04-05 03:12 PM

On top of it being a bootleg you also bought an Adam Sandler movie? Groan ... ;)

kornboy 03-04-05 03:13 PM

yeah it was...

I'm curious - do these bootleg discs look purple on the side that plays? (Like the standard blank discs you buy for your PC's DVD burner?) Or do these look like a genuine silver DVD? I assume the latter, but does that mean these Ebay power sellers have factory-quality DVD production equipment in their basement or something? Or do they just work as a middle man for someone operating out of Hong Kong? Please excuse my naivete'. :)

kornboy 03-04-05 03:25 PM

rennervision - the back of this disc looks tanish, not like a real dvd..

Big Worms 03-04-05 03:26 PM

Nothing for sale right now from this seller, but if you look at the past sales you find this a lot in the description.
"The artwork is different than that in the picture."

bboisvert 03-04-05 03:28 PM

Just glancing through past auctions, it seems like the seller has nearly 100% bootlegs ("artwork different than picture", etc.)

Unbelievable that no one has called him on it via feedback within the past 6 months... I can't stand sellers like this. Makes eBay a shitty place to be -- for both buyers and (legit) sellers alike.

SlingshotBandit 03-04-05 03:30 PM

As soon as I see the DVD-9 symbol, I steer clear away. Even for sales of around $5, it doesn't hurt to email the seller -- if you have any suspicisons of it's authenticity -- and ask if it's a "genuine" R1.

Exactly. Nowadays, genuine sellers have to go the extra length in describing the dvd, if it's not a bootleg.

I'm seeing a lot more "100% Genuine US-Retail, R1, Authentic! Not Asian Import"-type of descriptions. Which is good.

It's not some guy pressing DVDs in his basement, but there are many DVD pressing plants in Asia that will press bootleg discs in their off hours. So people who have a connection can get ahold of these pressed, silver backed boots (as opposed to purple backed burned discs)

STEVEIGNORANT 03-04-05 03:46 PM

DVD-5 and DVD-9 don't always indicate bootleg. The Animeigo discs state this on the back for instance. However I'd say that yeah, about 95% percent of the time that indicates bootleg.

danicus007 03-04-05 03:56 PM

Boot!

Fok 03-04-05 04:01 PM

How's the quality of the movie though?

RevKarl 03-04-05 04:08 PM

kornboy: Don't feel too bad; you're not alone. One of the Blockbusters in my area has bought 20+ similar discs...even though another store's manager told me they had been given handouts (with photos pointing out the DTS and DVD-9 cover markings) warning them about these Asian bootlegs.

I mean, yeah, it sucks that there are bootleggers on E-bay, but a guy who specifically says "artwork different than picture" is so obviously bootlegging that I wouldn't think an educated consumer would bother buying from him. I always think it's weird when people knock E-bay because of the potential for bootlegs when, as far as I can tell, the bootlegs are screamingly obvious 99.9% of the time. (And the other .1% are curious enough that you E-mail the seller "Is this a bootleg?" and they never respond.)

I don't mean to knock the OP; fooled once, shame on the bootlegger, naturally. You should take a look around these forums for threads about "how to spot bootlegs on E-bay", because they have a lot of tips on key words and phrases to avoid before you buy, rather than having to go through this hassle after the fact.

Also, you should report him, though trying to get your money back first isn't a bad idea. Letting him continue to get away with it just because *you* got your money back isn't really the right thing to do. Obviously, there are a lot of people who are buying from him just like you did and not realizing it's a bootleg. (or maybe not caring.)

kornboy 03-04-05 04:39 PM

Yeah, I emailed him, and hes gonna give me a refund, here was his response..

I will be glad to give you a refund. Please send the DVD back to me. I purchased this DVD from ebay, I watched and it was fine. I described the dvd just as it was. I buy, watch and sell quite a few dvds. I do not know of there origin nor do I copy them.
I am sorry you are not satisfied.

thanks,

Anthony

pathetic... least im getting my $ back..

buckee1 03-04-05 04:49 PM
