A few months ago, I read that Don Adams was in very poor health. Too bad, but he may not be available for any potential extras.
I look forward to buying all 5 seasons, extras or not. All I need is uncut episodes! I hated watching it on TV Land as they cut out whole scenes I remembered from seeing the (uncut) reruns when I was a kid. |
i certainly hope this comes out, it's one of the few remaining TV shows not on DVD I'm still interested in buying

According to TV Tome, there were five seasons (the first four on NBC, the last on CBS), running from September 1965 to May 1970, with a total of 138 episodes.

I'd imagine they would wait for the "Get Smart" motion picture with Steve Carrell to come out to time these DVDs with it... if the movie is still getting made.

Cool, I enjoyed the reruns on Nick at Night. I'd probably pick it up. Either that or rent it, at the very least.

In a nutshell, Mark's very well connected! Today he's reported at his NewsFromMe.com website that "a company" (he says that he believes it to be Time-Life...more on that in a moment) is preparing an announcement for "any day now", which will see the DVD release of every episode of Get Smart. We told you way back in February that a studio (not named at the time) was looking at finally getting this show released on DVD in time for the program's 40th anniversary. Part of the hold-up, as Evanier explains it, was a lot of confusion surrounding the rights to this particular property. A *lot* of people thought it would be Paramount who owned Get Smart, but Evanier explains that "Time-Life" is apparently the owner here, but the real issue now is "specifically WHO at Time-Life?" When Evanier says "Time-Life," it brings to mind the direct sales arm at TimeLife.com, which currently provides Hee-Haw releases, among others. There is also some discussion elsewhere that these DVDs could come out from Time Life, Inc. subsidiary Warner Home Video, as a mainstream retail release instead of from direct sales. Carl Birkmeyer, who runs the Would You Believe? website, is quick to point out that HBO (whose home videos are distributed by Warner Home Video) ought to be the current property owner due to their production of the 1995 Get Smart remake series starring Don Adams, Barbara Feldon, and Andy Dick. We're working on finding out more about this complicated matter for you, but right now all we *think* we know is that the earliest any DVDs would actually be available to consumers is around the first quarter of 2006, and that Season Sets are the direction they are looking at. Extras have been considered, but to our knowledge no decision had been made at the last time we heard anything. I don't care how much they are. If they release it, I'm buying it. This has been the #1 show I've always waited for on DVD, and now that ever so slowly every month it looks to be more than just a possibility, I'm pumped for this.

If they release uncut episodes, I'll buy all 5 seasons for sure. I will not buy them if they are the edited by four minutes each TV Land versions....

Get Smart is my #1 favorite sitcom of all time.
That being said, I am not a collector or a completist. I don't need to own every season just for the sake of completion. I buy DVDs to watch them again and again and again. I think I'll skip season 5, and maybe even season 4. But the first 3 seasons are masterpieces. But I haven't seen this show in such a long time. Does anyone else have any thoughts about when this show "jumped the shark?" |

Don't give up yet, Grundle! I think the "any day now" was a bit of hyperbole, but don't take it too literally. Things seem to still be cookin'.
