I thought of snatch but not sure if it has enough boxing?

Snatch is a good mention, not exactly a boxing movie...daredevil has boxing but not a boxing movie...good stuff anyhow.

Made also has an awesome boxing sequence.

Good older boxing films/documentaries?
 

Anyone know of any older films/documentaries available that focus on boxing? Like pre-70's? I've seen most of the decently big movies since Rocky, however I'm looking for an older feel. Thanks-

All great film noirs

wow great looking movies, will have to check those out, anything good made in the 30's?

Some of my favorites:

Gentleman Jim [1942] -- The true story of James J. Corbett and his quest to become heavyweight champion. Directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Errol Flynn [an ex-boxer and it shows], it contains fight scenes that are at once epic and a great deal of fun.

The Set-Up [1949] -- This boxing-noir features the always outstanding Robert Ryan as a washed up boxer who refuses to take a dive for the mob.

Fat City [1972] -- After a long string of less-than-stellar movies, John Huston's career renaissance began here. Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges play professional fighters on opposite ends of their careers.

Hard Times [1975] -- A gritty depression-era tale of a bare-knuckle boxer and his crooked manager. Charles Bronson + James Coburn + Walter Hill = Must See.

The Last Round: Chuvalo vs. Ali [2003] -- A recent documentary that you may have missed. It chronicles the career of a journeyman heavyweight who, on one magic night, went toe to toe with the best boxer in the world.

I agree with all three of these. The best part is that you can get Champion and the Set-Up in a two-pack for a really reasonable price.

It's actually Body and Soul & Champion in the Artisan 2-pack (The Set-Up is included in the Warner noir box set).

Duh. Oh well, once in a while what I type here is actually what I mean to. ;) Anyway, just get the WB Film Noir set (which is my favorite DVD set ever) as well as the Champion/Body & Soul set, and you'll have three of the best.

National Archives here in DC recently showed this and I was very impressed - great documentary - Highly recommended!

has anyone seen the PBS doc "American Experience - Fight" ? looks interesting, the guy who it's about Max Schmeling just died a few days ago, anyone who knows about him knows what an amazing story his life was, just wanted to see if anyone knew about this release

Regarding "The Fight" (American Experience)
The filmmaker's might need to correct the final title card before the end credits detailing the date of Schmelling's death. (The screening I attended was just the day after his death). The documentary also flawlessly intermixes both Schmelling and Louis' lives and matches - and for a viewer like myself who didn't really know all that much before seeing this - I was transfixed and rivetted by the story of these two men. PBS should re-air this when "The Cinderella Man" gets theatrically released.

"The Fight" is excellent and so is "Unforgivable Blackness". Because Jack Johnson's life/career had a huge impact on Joe Louis's career, and on how he was basically "forced" to behave a certain way, I strongly suggest that "Unforgivable Blackness" be viewed first.

While this aspect is briefly touched upon in "The Fight", one gets a much better understanding of the impact Johnson had on black fighters that came after him after viewing "Unforgivable Blackness". And of course, from an historical perspective, it makes perfect sense to watch "Unforgivable Blackness" first too!

I reviewed both titles but something tells me that giving links to reviews written in french won't do much good here. :)
