One of my fave films. Glad to see we're finally getting a new special edition of this title. Can't wait!

DESECRATION and HORROR director Dante Tomaselli has thrown his name into the hat of directors interested in remaking THE EVIL DEAD for Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures—and he has obtained the support of original EVIL DEAD star Ellen Sandweiss. The director, who recently wrapped SATAN’S PLAYGROUND (which stars Sandweiss, pictured, in her genre comeback), tells Fango, "I saw the original EVIL DEAD in 1981 when I was 11, and it seriously changed my life. It opened me up to how limitless, creatively, a low-budget horror movie could be. The film is like a magic trick or an out-of-body-experience, and every time I watch it, I am treated to the most spectacular horror movie in existence! It’s also surreal—extremely primal and nasty, with plenty of beautiful, H.P. Lovecraft-like imagery. It is fun, crazy, bloody and genuinely scary.
"When I first heard they were doing a remake," Tomaselli continues, "I was totally against it. But now the picture is coming into focus and I see that Rob Tapert is looking for a director and Raimi doesn’t want to direct it. Well, how about me? I’d love a chance! I’ve made three indie horror features with budgets similar to the original EVIL DEAD’s $350,000, and you can be sure I’d feature Ellen Sandweiss in it! Since working together on SATAN’S PLAYGROUND, we’ve become close friends. She’s a powerful actress and knows how much I love THE EVIL DEAD."
Indeed, Sandweiss—who reveals that she is currently involved in DVD extras for a further special edition of Raimi’s original, to be released in 2006 —says, "I’d love to see Dante Tomaselli direct an EVIL DEAD remake. Working with him on SATAN’S PLAYGROUND was a wonderful experience, plus his vision as a director and his lifelong devotion to horror make him an ideal candidate. Are you listening, Rob and Sam? My vote is for Dante…and now you owe me a cameo appearance!" Check out the official website for SATAN’S PLAYGROUND here. —Calum Waddell

The only good to come of this is ASH will not be in the remake. Bruce keeps that for himself and Evil Dead 4 will be made because of this.

well it said dvd extras, but maybe they meant for hd-dvd? also, i wonder if anytime a hd-dvd is going to be released would companies go ahead and release a new dvd edition too, assuming there is either new extras or a new/better transfer? because dvd will still have bigger sales potential over any hd-dvd for a while.

As long as the transfer is better, and a new commentary by Sam Raimi & Bruce "Don't call me Ash" Campbell,and/or maybe a new making of feature,I'll buy. Maybe throw in a Book of The Dead Edition V.2
No I know I'll buy whether or not these are featured. I'm just a completist when it comes to Evil Dead Trilogy. Damn moneygrubbing bastards!

For things are needed to make the rerererelease a must buy for myself
#1-option to view the film fullframe or matted.
#2-original mono audio is finally offered
#3-closed captions(so my GF can watch it)
#4-good not 'too' bright transfer(no damn obvious moon matte please) that still keeps it's gritty edge. I've always felt the past transfers were alittle 'too' bright, that it ruined the creep factor and the effects lost their impact more than ever.

I have the BOTD edition and it's fine...
Although, if they absolutely need to do another edition, make it 1.66:1 anamorphic (1.85:1 is too much) and include the original stereo/mono (It's 1982, so which was used?).
The 16x9 version is still an excellent master for a 16mm movie.
