The only version I'm aware of is the region 2 PAL version that was released by the British Film Institute.

If you have a player capable of multi-region playback and conversion of PAL to NTSC, this is probably more affordable than trying to get the out-of-print R1, and at least it's a 100% legal copy of the film (many of the R1 copies floating around out there are bootlegs).

So no region 1 re-release? I dont have a region free player unfortunatly. I can eat the cost of a facets version. I am not so much about the worth of the dvd but interesting in owning the movie more. Pasolini's life was a weird trip.

This is advise you can give your children and grandchildren:

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME ON THIS MOVIE

Not because it's sick or anything, but because it's stupid, dull, and boring.

Class is right. I'll take it one step further - this movie sucks. But that's my opinion.

well, rather than supporting the bootlegging industry.....
(does the bootleg Criterion still sell for about $100?)
why not get a cheap region free player (I just recently got the Phillips 642 from Target for $60) and get the legit R2 disc from amazon.co.uk or something? That disc supposedly has an improved picture over the Criterion anyway.

some info on the Phillips 642

There's a two-disc French release that blows all other releases away in terms of extras, but the film was also recently released here in Finland, and from what I hear, that edition has the best transfer quality, thought it has (almost?) no extras.

And to the threadcrappers, Salo can be called many things, but stupid it certainly is not. To put it bluntly, some viewers just can't see beyond the shit.

Also, is there any news on the facets version? It is a boot? I saw the whole Salo-file page thing and the jusry is still out on it. Does facets.org acknowledge this as one of their own, because facets is a good company that my university orders from often.

Let me put it this way - if you TIVO every insect eating segment of Fear Factor and watch it religiously multiple times, you'll love this movie.

yes, it's most likely a bootleg, and if it is not, it's still not an authorized release in anyway so it doesn't make it any less illegal or immoral. Facets didn't make these things so calling them "Facets version" really isn't accurate. They are most likely bootlegged Criterions that Facets obtained thinking they were genuine. Facets pulled them from their site as soon as it was pointed out that they were not the real deal. I am sure most of the copies available on ebay these days are not even from those few days that Facets was selling these...new boots are probably being made as the demand for them continues.

hmmm, well I don't think I can say I "like" this movie....but I do have respect for it...and I think it is the most important film that Pasolini made. I certainly do not think the film is garbage, but I would never criticize anyone who does. It's a difficult film.

It seems to me that the people who are most vocal about their hatred for this film fall into one of two categories....
1. they were either disgusted by the film and think it's sick, immoral and downright repulsive.....all of which are arguably true, but that is sort of the point of the entire film (the film was made to be a representation of how Pasolini viewed life living under a fascist government)
or 2. they wanted to see this movie having heard about how it is the most shocking and disgusting film ever made and were disappointed that they could see more gore and disgusting things in countless horror films.....

Let me put it to you this way...OBVIOUSLY you have no idea what you are talking about nor (if you have seen the film) you grasped the complexity of it. I would suggest you stick to Fear Factor as obviously it suits you well.

And please do not threadcrap...this film has been discussed many times before so we do not need to start over. If you have any info regarding the original poster's question -RERELEASE??- then please feel free to contribute, IF not...start your own thread in the movie forum where you could discuss your disagreement with the production values, message, quality...etc.

Regards,

Also in agreeance with pro-b, but getting back to the dvds, Dvdcompare.net says that there is a R2 Italian version that is anamorphic with a 5.1 track, however there are no english subtitles Too bad too, because i would be all over this one.

I'd say go with the BFI edition, I own it and it's great copy of the film, No cuts, and english Subtitles.

I've seen way more controversial films, with worse scenerios being protrayed,

I'm not sure anyone who knock the film, has actually even seen it, as it's only mildly disturbing..of course, i find all spielberg films to be utterly disturbing, but that's just me.. to each his own..
