if you get enjoyment out of watching a movie, then you've done so correctly.
if that means you need tom servo and crow t. robot at the bottom of the screen to enjoy it, so be it. (man, it'd be so awesome having them at the bottom of modern movies.)
if you need it to fill up your 4:3 tv, so be it.
all the consumer wants is to enjoy it as they see fit. who are you to tell them how to do it?
you're welcome to say they should try watching widescreen over fullscreen. but liking fullscreen doesn't make them wrong.

WOW. I didn't realize that my comments would create this much bashing of fullscreen. Seriously some of you people are saying that i'm an idiot just because I like fullscreen. If that's how you feel fine but it kind of surprises me that some of you feel that strong about some one's preferences of movies.

The point that you seem to be missing 'moviesaregreat' is that you are not watching the "correct" and "intended" image that the creators of the film want you to see, just because you want to fill up your "square-shaped" TV.
So tell me, when you eventually buy a widescreen TV in a few years, are you gonna bitch because your Fullscreen DVD won't fill up the entire screen...on the sides?

I respect your opinion Mike but I will always like and buy fullscreen no matter what. Believe me widescreen t.v's will not take over the world, there will still be a lot of regular t.v.'s around i guarantee it.

I get the difference between WS and FS.
if it's not a visually oriented movie (ie, stupid comedy or anything that's more dialogue driven than visually driven), I know what I'm doing and I don't care.
Don't assume I'm stupid.

Granted it's not a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this movie really isn't as wide as some. It happens every week practically, a lot bitching over 'oh I don't like them black bars', 'I'm missing the picture!' etc. I would very interested in knowing what the purchasing ratio of Ray is: fullscreen to widescreen.
When King Arthur was released. it was the same thing, the guy behind the new release table was barraged with customers requesting the fullscreen version - I just stood back and watch dumbfounded.

I admit I have a few fullscreen DVDs, but that's because it's the only way to get them (ex. my David Carradine tai chi DVDs).

The reason full-screen was created was studios found out they had a market for it. They got so many calls in from irate people asking why the image was cut off. Someone realized that and ran with it. I guarantee people will be complaining when they start watching them on widescreen tvs once they upgrade. Then finally we will be in equilibrium.

One issue that hasn't been mentioned is that the reason we see so many fullscreen DVDs is that stores like Wal-Mart require them for their customers or they would not order these titles at all.
It's basically a political issue between the retailers and the studios. The studios give in since they don't want to lose any sales. Otherwise, we would see even fewer fullscreen titles.

I equate this kind of stupidity to why teachers pass through students who can't read just to get them out of the system.
If someone is unwilling to learn or in some cases, just care, then I have no use for them.
I don't have a 16:9 TV, and probably won't until 42" plasmas* get down to less than $1000. But I have watched WS movies since '93. The first one being the original VHS release of The Last of the Mohicans which only came in WS. I didn't like it at the time, because I just wasn't used to it and only had a 19" TV. But after a while when a few more titles came out that had WS as the standard option, like the 1960 The Alamo, and Lawrence of Arabia, it was then that I learned what was going on and by that time, WS VHS was starting to become somewhat popular and I begin building my VHS collection with WS and my TV was just a standard 27" deal.
*I say 42" plasma because I only have 43.5" clearance in my TV cubby space and most 42" LCD TVs are about 47" wide.)

Course, we could spend weeks arguing about what 'art' and 'entertainment' really mean.
