which in turn, they are not being very specfic about it - true extended cut, tv cut? reedited studio cut?? Choose you're wording.

Has David Lynch's involvement in this release been confirmed also?

Instead of assuming that they're flippantly throwing it around, how about that they simply put it in their video information database to inform consumers? It's not on the package in embossed gold letters. They have a category for film ratings in their video release info, and the extended cut is listed as "not rated." Every film has that category listed in their system. DVD Answers chose to point this fact out when annoucing the disc, not Universal.

It's been confirmed that he was not involved with this disc. Was never involved. And never wants to be involved.

The Video Watchdog article compared both versions of the movie to the script, not to what was actually shot. Lynch was ordered to stop filming several subplots from the script during production, and never put them to film. Additionally, he also improvised some completely new scenes that have never adequately been cataloged. There's a production photo of a Fremen ceremony of some sort in the "Making of Dune" book.

If the pic is as good as the French version, has DTS sound, and the extended version is truly anamorphic, ill upgrade my French version definately.

This time, I really think the 1/31/06 date is solid. I am tired of all these delays.

slowcloud 10-05-05 05:36 AM

Great news! And just as I re-bought the older Universal DVD that went OOP (at a decent price at least). Back to the re-sale market, I guess. At least this finally feels like it's coming.

Toben 10-05-05 08:25 AM

From the article over at DVD Answers, this is coming in a steelbook case, which is cool. This will be the third steelbook release in North America, if I'm not mistaken (the first being Appleseed and the second being the Canadian release of Ong-Bak). On a sidenote, the character's hands on the cover art are huge. I know it's because they're outstretched and closer to the camera, but they're as big as his head. Boo to the double-sided disc though.

I have a metal case for the 2 disc Akira set. Each side has a plastic tray to hold each disc.

I have that too... while it's a steel case, it's not a SteelBook, which is a paticular type of packaging (not just metal). I also have the Appleseed SteelBook release, and the SteelBook is much, much better, since it's the size of a regular case, instead of being oversized and hard to display on a shelf like the Akira release and the Disney Treasure releases.

I got the sense that the 'extended' ending was filmed - oh well.

good news. lets hope this release date sticks.

meritocracy 10-06-05 03:02 PM

Great news, but I'm still holding out a bit longer to see if the new release date sticks prior to unloading the OOP disc.

Depending on what the OOP disc is currently fetching, you may be better off dumping it, grabbing this region-free DVD player for $20:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...763990-9024855

And getting the awesome French DTS edition:

http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...679240-0599364

meritocracy 10-06-05 04:49 PM

I'm already region-free, but considering the R1 isn't being released until January, and the date may still move further out again, I'm hoping that the OOP disc will move up a bit in value. Right now it's going for around $20. Either way, dumping it and picking up the new release won't cost me much either way.

The DTS track is tempting however...

glad to see this on track

this little write up was posted up at Digitalbits:

Next up is a title that had been previously announced by Universal, but was then pulled for a time. David Lynch's Dune: Extended Edition will now officially street on 1/31/06 (SRP $27.98). The 2-disc set will include both the original theatrical version (137 minutes), plus an all-new "extended version" (177 minutes) in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Extras are currently expected to include deleted scenes with introduction by Raffaella De Laurentiis, 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (including Designing Dune, Special Effects, Models & Miniatures and Wardrobe Design), a gallery of production photos and production notes. We don't yet have official word from Universal as to whether or not Lynch himself participated (the title was originally delayed in the hopes that he would agree to be involved). We'll try to find out and let you know in the next few days.

so wait... it's a new cut and it's in 5.1 - this is getting more convoluted with each 'new' annoucement.

:hscratch: What do you mean? The extended cut's aspect ratio (2.35:1) and sound (DD 5.1) have always been the same in the different announcements... check back on page 2.

no what I meant was - is this a new 'new' cut or is the TV cut of the film? I think once Universal sends out the review copies of the disc, we'll finally get a definative answer once and for all - Universal's confirmation on what 'new' cut means has been pretty elusive IMO.

Seashellz 10-07-05 12:34 PM

whats even better: Its on TWO discs!!

PixyJunket 10-07-05 12:48 PM

Wow, released on my birthday.

Does Universal even send out review copies anymore? I thought they stopped doing that years ago...

As much as I'd love to see this, indications are that it's gonna be a DVD18. The Digital Bits hasn't been too reliable on early news in general.

I honestly have no idea.
