And just let me second your recommendation of the French disc. I just watched it on Thursday night and it was fantastic. Full agreement with your review. That set, coupled with the UK special edition, will hold me over until we eventually get a decent SE in the U.S. (which is seeming less and less likely).

God, are we ever going to get this release in the States? I mean what's the frakin' deal?

milo bloom 07-26-05 09:27 PM

I've been really jonesing for this lately. I think my heart actually jumped when I saw the thread on the first page. Damnable spammers. Damn them all to hell!

slowcloud 09-21-05 07:46 AM

So what exactly has happened with this release? Postponed indefinitely and silence?

Welcome to the wacky, wild world of Universal Home Video. ;)

(Yep, no news at all. But if you go region free, there's a fantastic French edition recently released.)

Like bboisvert said, there is a great French version with a WONDERFUL picture and great DTS sound. Go Region free you wont regret it!!

ShagMan 09-21-05 09:33 AM

getting the french copy isn't all that great, because there's tons of special features that aren't subtitled :(

RichardW 09-21-05 09:52 AM

The anamorphic picture and DTS is good enough for me.

... and it costs almost $40. I'm waiting for a review of the korean disc that just came out to see how it compares. It will probably be cheaper.

It wouldn't be so bad if they'd just say "It got delayed because of [BLANK] and our new estimated release date is [BLANK]" or "Sorry but it's been canceled forever, goodbye." But no. Instead they just leave us hanging here, wondering whether we should import or wait.

exactly!

Not sure what it means, but Dune: Behind the Scenes

Says they got a note that as of Aug 25, the production company doing the extras said they had finished their work.

SPECULATION on my part: all the extras are finished, but Universal is still trying to figure out if they can make a widescreen extended edition. /Speculation.

joliom 09-21-05 11:52 PM

They probably pulled it so they could revamp the artwork to make it the "Dune: Totally Spiced Up Edition" and switch to a poorly mastered dual-sided, dual-layered disc plagued with freeze-ups and other digital artifacts just for consistency's sake.

Well, best news so far. Maybe it hasn't been abandoned...

Yes, I've known about this version and I have been region free for some years, but I'm big on extras and not big on paying big $ for DVDs, if I don't have to.

I still have lots of other DVDs to watch in the meantime, so I can wait, but I just hate being left in limbo. . . Damn, yooouuu, Universal!

critterdvd 09-22-05 01:03 PM

I've been reading that they are trying to tie it in with something... but that doesn't make any sense because the closest thing on their release schedule to Dune is "SerenitY" and that opens in a little over a week... maybe for the DVD?

The way things are going they may be able to tie it in with the month between May and July of next year!!!!

So the extended cut is still looking like 2.35:1 instead of 4x3, interesting.

I love how they word this - unrated like it's R-rated or something.

can't wait to see the deleted scenes section - wonder if it's gonna be as detailed or informative as the Video Watchdog article had written up on (so many eons ago).

milo bloom 10-04-05 01:35 PM

I can go into a store and find plenty of "unrated" titles meant for kids. It just means that they didn't submit it to the MPAA.

Certainly, glad to see this back on track, though I had been hoping for before Christmas.

I know, but the way studios flippantly throw around this word - is just getting ridiculous IMO.

The studio doesn't seem to be a making a big deal out of the fact that it's "Unrated" though, just that it's the "Extended Edition".
