Following up on this... From DVDTown this morning.

Universal will release "12 Monkeys: Special Edition" on DVD this May 10th.

The new special edition will contain some of the same extras as found the already released "Collector's Edition" but it will have a all-new digitally remastered picture.

The extras include "Commentary with Director Terry Gilliam and Producer Charles Roven", "The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys making of feature", "The 12 Monkeys Archives", "Production notes" and a "Theatrical trailer."

Seems to me that a new transfer is ready for HD-DVD and Universal plans to dip from that same transfer, one last money grab before the HD-DVD version drops.

I guess they just want to make at least some money of the new transfer.

Maybe Universal is the first studio to realize just how big a financial failure HD-DVD will be.

I wish they would have done this with Apollo 13. Also, I hope more studios do this --- might be the only way we get some of these badly needed re-releases/new transfers.

Not a bad cover, and the SRP is $15! Just enough for me to finally get this movie .

When the Universal Laserdisc of 12 Monkeys was released, the commentary continued past the end of the credits. When the DVD came out, which was essentially just a port of the LD, they just cut it off when the credits ended (probably an engineer who wasn't paying attention). I'll be interested to see if they correct the problem in the new release.

Does that mean Universal's re-release of Apollo 13 next month will not have a new transfer?

Yes, that's what it means. As far as anyone knows anyway.

I also sold my original copy when I heard this would be re-released. Now I'm pissed I did. I wanted to watch it many times since.

Am I understanding this correctly none of the versions have La Jetee on it?

This clip has reached cult status and I would love to see it on the release. Anyone knows if the new SE has La Jetee on it?

Thanks

None of the pre-release info mentions LA JETEE, but if you're willing to shell out for it, you can find it on the out-of-print DVD SHORT #2: DREAMS.

Actually, the 12 Monkeys Archive IS on the disc. It is just buried, much like it is on the insert. Go to the Bonus Features page, click on the Hamster Factor, then click on Chapter Selection for the documentary, turn to the last page of chapters and voila. There it is. It's just artwork and stuff; no deleted scenes.

I got a peek at the new disc, and eyeballing it on my 32-inch tube set, I can't tell for sure if it is indeed a new transfer. It looks a tiny bit smoother, with less grain, but that just may be my imagination. I thought the original transfer was pretty good to begin with. Those with bigger screens or 16X9 sets will be able to tell right away, I suppose.

All the extras from the first release have been carried over, except for the cast bios, which are useless anyway IMO. The commentary track is no longer cut off. And the new disc contains no insert other than a flyer for their upcoming DUNE DVD, so if you're gonna swap out your old one, hang on to the original insert, which was mighty nice.

Any release date listed on the insert? Or is this just something that they printed up way back when, before the release was postponed/cancelled?

Also, can you confirm the sound on the disc -- that is is DD 5.1 only (without DTS)?

Rusty, thanks for the update...as long as all the extras are intact and the commentary track is whole, I'm set for an upgrade!

No date on the flyer, alas. Just the proverbial "coming soon".

No DTS either, just DD 5.1. Considering the movie is a few minutes over 2 hours, and the doc is 90-some minutes, there probably wasn't any room on the disc.

Hm, I guess I will hold out for the HD-Blu-DVD-Ray Superduper coming out.

So, what, the new HD-DVDs are going to be the same as the first DVDs that came out? 12 Monkeys, the Mask, etc.?

Nope, sounds like they just fixed the commentary and (slightly?) improved the transfer. I suppose that's a good thing, and the price is right... but it knocks it further down on the 'must have' list.

As far as the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray situation... it's sounding more and more like they are going to scrap the original format plans and combine into some new uber-format. All of those title announcements are just vaporware. I wouldn't hold my breath.

They're still cramming everything onto 1 disc? That's disappointing.

Agreed. I assumed/thought I read that it would be a 2-disc set.
