How, exactly, does this make any sense?
It doesn't, but isn't it better than the more common situation, pulling a disc for several years, allowing fans to spend $50-$100 buying leftovers (and often bootlegs), and then releasing a disc which is practically the same, maybe even with a little less?

I just think it's weird that they recorded a new commentary track.

If they did this, and added the DTS track to the first disc, and LA JETEE to the second disc, I'd definitely double-dip. As it stands now though, no I won't.

No, the original version had a commentary by Terry Gilliam and Charles Roven.
That's true. I guess I just remember Gilliam speaking for 99% of it or so.

And the "12 Monkeys Archives" are actually listed on the insert of the original version but they are not on the actual DVD.
Actually, I just looked at my insert and saw no mention of an "Archive." Just The Hamster Factor, Production Notes, Bios, and other Universal movie suggestions.

I just think it's weird that they recorded a new commentary track.
As noted above, I was wrong about that. It's likely the same commentary. The only new things seems to be this "Archive" thing.

I have the older DTS release, so I'll pass on this.

Thumbs down to Universal.

It's buried in the Hamster Factor stuff. Look there... there's 14 chapters, then the trailer, then the reference to the Archive.

Okay, I see it now.

Then I guess I have to join everyone else in asking: what's new about this upcoming release?

I sold my 12 Monkey's DTS to someone in the UK for about $23 shipped. Was happy with that!

It's basically the same as the old DVD, it just doesn't have the Gold banners at the top and bottom anymore. Anyway, I think I'll just hang on to the Collector's Edition unless major they forgot to tell us about this release.

it would be also be nice if Criterion would also release their special edition of Gilliam's 'Adventures of Baron Munchausen' and 'The Fisher King' on DVD - but alas, it sure seems that Columbia/TriStar Home video has no real interest in doing this in the near future.

Not much. Guess having DTS and the Hamster Factory on one release is nice. But I don't give a crap about DTS so I'm sticking with the SE.

I always wanted to add this to my burgeoning digital library. Alas, it was always unavailable or ou of print so I will pick this up for sure.

Thank you, I will be here all week. Seriously though, this is a great movie and the documentary is really good. If someone does not own 12 Monkeys, this release is great, but for those of us expecting a deluxe ultimate type edition, this release is a probably a waste.

According to Digital Bits, this is a newly remastered transfer. I'm still skeptical, however.

That's good... because there's no indication that this new release has DTS.

I'll only pick it up if the transfer is new (like the Bits says). If not, I'll stick with the CE I have already. Like the low MSRP, though; hopefully it is remastered.

I watched this the other day and the transfer was pretty good.

They are still putting both the movie (129 minutes) and the documentary (87 minutes) on a single DVD, so I don't think the new transfer will look much better.

Never picked this up, so I might have to grab it when it comes out. I do wonder why Universal is rereleasing a Collector's Editon with the exact same supplements. But then again, it's Universal. Everyone's favorite company.

I sold my CE a fe years ago when there was a bunch of talk about an ultimate edition. This is disappointing. And looking at that new cover makes me want my old CE back.

The CE cover isn't much different though. Different placement for the title, but same big heads.

Yeah, you're right now that I look at the old one. I was remembering it differently for some reason.

Me too. Let us know as soon as anyone can confirm a new transfer, then I can unload my old copy (if all extras are indeed kept intact on the new release). Thanks!
