On DVDAnswers.com they report that the Unrated DVD has been cancelled! I hate Universal

Can I press charges againist Universal? What are they doing? Pulling a Club Dread? Maybe we have hope to get Unrated in October? I still want it now!

This is an absolutely horrible butchering in the marketing department. How do you take a movie that sucked as it is anyways, release artwork for an unrated cut, and then cancel it? That's awful.... just awful.

clearly, there is a reason why they had to cancel it. i know first hand that home video divisions consider unrated editions and director's cuts to be valuable marketing tools. so most likely, the problem lies in producing the unrated cut. could be anything -- filmmaker objections or unavailability, monetary disputes.

I wasn't planning on getting this but it is a very amateur move by Universal.

Of course the R-rated "Fullscreen" version is still available Thanks, but no thanks, Universal.

Normally that would make sense but when it comes to Universal... you have to wonder.

Hmmm.

Why do I get the feeling that they're hanging onto that "unrated" version until Halloween, or when the next sequel comes about?

This seriously ticks me off. I was looking forward to getting this. Makes me not want to get the movie at all now. I probably will just rent it now, hopefully this backfires if this is some sort of fascist plan of theirs to wait a little while then release it so everyone that cares has to double dip, taking advantage of the working man.

There better be a widescreen version of the R rated cut or else no sale, which is unfortunate because i actually enjoyed this movie.

That sucks. I just saw this movie at the dollar theater with my girlfriend and thought it was hilarious! So what a second, this also means no widescreen version at all? So it can match with Child's Play 1 I suppose. Someone should send Chucky over there to teach them a lesson!

Amazon still lists it as availiable:
"Availability: This item will be released on April 12, 2005. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."

Why do they only release the theatrical versions in fullscreen sometimes? What if I want to see it as exactly as it was in the theater? Hmm, time to go back to the theater with a video camera to make my own widescreen version... well probably not. I know it's usually just with these "hey lets add a couple of seconds here and there and call it unrated" (Charlie's Angels 2) versions, but still.

Well this morning DVDEmpire just added the widescreen version of the R-Rated cut, so at least we can still get that. It looks as if the unrated version got kerplunked.

Well it's the fact that not only is it a extended unrated edition. It had cool features as well. Like the Chucky Interview & Screen Tests. And "Slashed Scenes" aka Deleted Scenes. This just sucks. They better release the Unrated in October!!!

That's fine and dandy if that's what happens. But they shouldn't be releasing DVD cover art and officially announcing DVD titles that aren't 100% in the green. I don't care how it gets sliced... don't make official announcements if there's any room for there to be any sort of cancellation. I can see if there's 'talk' that there's going to be an unrated cut that might see the light of day, and then that project ends up getting wiped. But this was pretty much all official and announced and everything but pretty much being released.

When you know there is or was an unrated cut, you announce it, and whether it's the companies fault or not, if anything goes wrong with actually releasing that, it's the company that people are going to get angry with and blame. Universal I'm sure has enough brains to know that the public is watching them... especially after all the flubs that were their fault. When it comes to marketing and things like this, it's not the idea of 'right' or 'wrong' that they look to blame, people look to blame the messenger. Universal I'm sure could have seen this problem in advance if they put their heads on straight, and cleared everything they needed to clear first.

About Child's Play 1 in widescreen, does this mean anything? From fast-rewind.com's Child's Play page:

"Don't forget that Child's Play is now available to order on Widescreen DVD using our special 80s search device..."

welcome to the realities of working in hollywood. i'm sure colleen and her people are just as disappointed with the turn of events as you are. i know how strongly they feel about unrated editions making for a great marketing tool. U routinely budgets up to $250,000 for features like docs, commentary and interviews for their special edition features. that's a lot of dough to throw away on unused material so i'm sure the reason for its cancellation was unexpected and equally disappointing to them. again it could be something as trivial as someone's ego -- maybe the director or producer of the film stepped in because they didn't like the content being produced for the dvd. it could be almost anything.

Why not? It made a profit and people like the Chucky character. It'll probably do quite well on home video.

so what scenes were trimmed to secure the film's R-rating?

It may not have even been a case about trimming to get an R rating, it doesn't say it's the directors cut, it's the 'unrated and extended' cut. So, who knows.
