"Casino" 10th Anniversary Edition (June 14th)

I am hoping that "Casino" will be released in a deluxe special edition this year, since it is the 10th anniversary of the film. That seems to be popular with studios nowadays as an excuse to release an SE version of an old film.

I've been searching around but I have not seen any news of "Casino" coming out on DVD this year. Does anybody have any news or rumors?

I'd love to see a deluxe edition like they did with "GoodFellas"

Thanks!

I read here that Casino SE is apparently in the works.

Mike Lowrey 01-31-05 09:26 PM

Yeah, I wouldn't mind an SE of this. I have Scarface - 20th Anniversary Edition, Goodfellas - SE, and Heat - SE on pre-order. Getting in my mafia crime fix on the same day. :D

There's no mafia in Heat. Just a crime ring headed by an actor famous for mafia roles.

And Casino SE is indeed being made. The mayor of Las Vegas shot an intro for it recently (there was anarticle about it in our local paper).

it will be welcome news when it does arrive...I'm sure WHEN Scorcese gets his Oscar this year....you will see an announcement.

Hopefully soon...I would love to see that vegas article if anyone has it handy.

I'd love to see that happen, and I think that he deserves it for "The Aviator". Unfortunately, I predict a "Million Dollar Baby" sweep.

Cameron 02-01-05 03:02 AM

I find myself feeling the same thing....i love clint....i have not seen his new movie, because i fear it can beat it....my hope is clint gets the best actor award and marty gets his dues

Shannon Nutt 02-01-05 04:18 AM

With all respect to Marty, I don't think THE AVIATOR matches some of the work he has done in the past. On top of that, it's not the Best Directed movie this year - Eastwood's MILLION DOLLAR BABY is. So if we're talking about who deserves it, Clint is my pick...although as William Munny would say, "Deserves got nothing to do with it." I wouldn't be suprised if Marty won.

Buttmunker 02-01-05 07:20 AM

How come the character played by Robert DeNiro had the name changed from Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal to Ace Rothstein? In the book, it is Frank (and that was the real name), but in the movie, all the characters names were changed to fictional ones. Why? Is there a rule that says you can use real names in books but not in film?!

Geofferson 02-01-05 08:26 AM

I can't wait for a Casino SE. It rivals Goodfellas (and is better in some aspects, IMO).

mr.rs 02-01-05 08:50 AM

There is a new Special Edition being released in R2.
Someone mentioned it a few days ago on the international forum.
More than likely this'll mean an R1 release soon as well.

I already own Casino, but I would be interested to see what they do for the SE version.

Well, it's certainly *easier*, legally, to show fictional people breaking numerous laws than to show real people doing so; I'm guessing they wanted to dramatize certain elements and it was an easier way to do so. That's just a guess, though; I'm sure it'll be mentioned on the DVD.

I posted this the day it was in the paper. Just a brief mention about Casino, the article is about his side-projects.

Here's the article:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_ho.../25278264.html

I saw him in the LA airport last month and introduced my daughter to him. I came thisclose to asking him about the Casino DVD, but decided that would be too geeky even for me.

There was another interesting column in todays paper. Tony Spilotro's old hangout was just torn down (Spilotro was one of Mayor Goodman's clients and was portrayed by Joe Pesci in the movie version as Nicky Santoro)

Totally agree....MDB was the best directed movie of the year IMO.

Clint not only directed, but he acted and wrote the score.

Personally, I think MDB will not win much this year even though it should sweep most of the major categories.

I love Marty and most of his films (taxi driver, casino, cape fear and goodfellas mainly). I would not be angry to see him win, but it wouldnt be for the Aviator. I think it would be more of a lifetime award.

I do hope that he wins at some point in his career, but this year, I just think MDB is better.

DavidH 02-01-05 12:34 PM

Would love to see a new transfer for Casino.

Cameron 02-01-05 12:44 PM

I would agree that Scorcese has done far better movies...he has always been inched out...I would just hate to see him end up not having an oscar.

hitchcock never won an oscar...Thalberg award, AFI lifetime achievment award....his memory lives on better than any other director....no doubt that film fans and critics will remember him...its not that its needed...but his piers (the academy) should pay the man the respect he is due.

i still have not seen MDB, and I am sure it is brilliant...but I am pulling for Marty

thanks for the article Decker

I'm sure that's why they changed the names in the movie, to prevent any legal issues from the real people. Even the casino name is fake. It was the Stardust casino in real life, not the "Tangiers."

But the movie follows the actual events almost exactly. Some people have complained that the plot of the film is not very realistic, but they obviously do not know that this is based on a true story. Virtually everything in the film actually happened to Frank "Lefty Rosenthall (DiNero) and Tony "The Ant" Spilantro (Pesci).

As they say, "truth is stranger than fiction."

BTW, Frank Rosenthall is retired in Florida. I saw him on ABC Nightline a few years ago talking about online gambling. Spilantro really was beaten to death by baseball bats in a corn field in 1986.

In terms of stature and credibility, Scorsese doesn't need an Oscar as much as the academy needs to give him one.

Just another post of agreement.

Personally, I have never taken the Academy Awards seriously. I have been in television, I have won awards and I have been on judging committees, it's all a joke.

Just remember that the Oscars were originally conceived as a way to promote movies during the winter when most people were staying home. That's why the nominations come out in Jan. and the ceremony is a couple months later -- so they can promote all the "oscar nominees" to drum up new business.

Not if he's not the best director that year. IF the award is a bold statement for the best work of the year, the academy gains credibility (like they got after giving the prize to Polanski for The Pianist, over Scorsese, BTW). If it's a backhanded lifetime achievement award for work that's not up to his standards, that's almost embarassing. The Aviator isn't a bad film by any means, but it's far from his best work. If we could go back in time and give Marty either Redford's or Costner's Oscar, I'd be all for it. But you won't hear me cheer too loudly if he wins this year.
