The Petrified Forest DVD - What I really wanted...
I love The Petrified Forest - it is one of my all time favorite movies. I've got it coming in the mail with the WB Gangster collection, but I've already read the reviews and know what the extra features are - and the one feature I wanted more than ANY other isn't on there.
The 1950's TV remake with Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda, and Lauren Bacall. I've seen a few brief clips from it, so I know it was archived somewhere and still exists - I've just never been able to watch Bogart's second take as Duke Mantee.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that they put all the extras on these DVDs that they did - especially with The Petrified Forest, but if they had put the TV remake on there it would have made it one of my favorite DVD releases to date.
Hell, it still will be one of my favorites, but I'll always look at it like something is missing that should be on the DVD.

It was a one-hour TV version if I remember right. I think it was done as part of an anthology movie series at the time. Different live or made for TV movies in a one hour time slot (the original Casino Royale was done live in a one hour format back in 1954 or so). It may be that IMDB considers it part of a larger anthology series rather than an individual movie or program.
It certainly could have been included on the dvd - there would be plenty of space to include 50 more black and white minutes.
I've read that Bogart doesn't quite have the same edge the 2nd time out, but I'd love to see it to compare for myself. Hopefully someday I'll get the chance...

I didn't like this movie.
It didn't even seem like a gangster movie.
Bogie is good, but it doesn't seem like he's on screen that long.
The best thing about the dvd is the cartoon that has these old Hollywood stars in them.

That's too bad - I've always loved this movie.
Leslie Howard and Bette Davis are both great in The Petrified Forest, and (IMO) the dialogue is fantastic. Bogart steals the movie once he shows up, though - and then it really gets good.
I've been wanting this movie on DVD for years, but I also wanted the TV version as an extra. At least I've got the movie and some other great extras....

Look under Notable TV Apperances:
"Producers' Showcase" playing "Duke Mantee" in episode: "The Petrified Forest" (episode # 1.9) 30 May 1955
It would have been a nice extra.
