Curb your enthusiasm

I've had quite a few possitive blind buys, and maybe only two or three negative ones.

"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" from this past week is right up at the top of the list... Great documentary, AND a great DVD! And that's coming from a non-Metallica fan.

The Matrix

It was one of the first dvds I purchased what semms like so many years ago. This film really blew me away and has influence so many other films! Can't believe that it was not mentioned before my post of 105. Matrix Reloaded is one of my worst Blind Buys. What a huge disappointment!

I went to Blockbuser one night looking for something, I forget what, and when they didn't have what I was looking for, I rented The Sopranos, Disk 1. We watched it right away and went back and rented disk 2. The next day I bought Season 1 and each subsequent one when it came out. I blind bought the rest and have never regretted it.

Since I haven't been to the theater in over 5 years and don't rent that much, probably 50% of my collection is blind buys. That being said, I think my best blind buy so far is:

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

I bought it without really knowing much about it and man is it a visual and audio masterpiece. The story could be better, but I was still entertained. The PQ and sound may be my new reference material, however.

mindgame : recently out in japan with english subtitles. stunning animated film from studio 4 C who animated the animatrix stuff... no one is talking about it, no one spotted it, very few are buying it, and its just a masterpiece... better animation than anything ive seen other than ghibli films. and ive watched alot of animation...

Best: Hellboy, Neon Genesis Evangelion series.

Worst: Van Helsing

"Arrested Development" was a blind buy, and I think it's one of the funniest and most original comedy shows since "The Simpsons". And it doesn't hurt that the DVD release is really good.

I noticed someone mention "Freaks & Geeks", and that has to be one of the best blind buys ever. I've been a fan for many years, and the DVD release was one of the most anticipated events of my life (sad, uh?). I have the Yearbook Edition which is one of the finest DVD releases ever. Not everyone is going to like this show (Dawson's Creek fans should pass on this one), but if you're into bittersweet, heartwarming, hilarious and realistic shows about high school outsiders, this show is a gem.

Run Lola Run, on my wife's recommendation (she was just my girlfriend then). Loved it!

Here I am agreeing with you in another thread.

Freaks & Geeks and Arrested Development are my best blind buys ever. For the record, I buy at least 60% of my DVDs blind.

Firefly and 24. Hands down.

Incredibly enough, I blind bought the first four seasons of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer when Best Buy had a really great deal on them a couple of years back. I had never watched a full episode and had only maybe seen a couple of hours total of the show but it really hooked me and the timing was right as I was really wanting to get into something new. Seven seasons on DVD later, it's my favorite television show of all time, hands down.
