"The DVD Revolution" book...and I'm mentioned...

I know this may get bumped over to "books"....but I thought a few of you may not stop there so....maybe they will leave it here for a while.

I just recieved my advanced copy of, The DVD Revolution: Movies, Culture & Technology...and it really is a great read! no...not because I'm mentioned in it....it's just a well written and researched book. Aaron Barlow, who teaches early American literature and previously taught film studies at Pratt Institute in NYC, has done a fantastic job. and of course...anything I can be involved in is fine by me. first the New York Times....now this. the book even mentions the NYT article from Feb. of last year! you just gotta love it!! the book is up for pre-order at Amazon, but it's real purpose is to be included in libraries of film schools. COOL!! my little involvement came within the chapter, DVD Fan Culture and my personal fave part is:

"Gut's feeling about his dvd collection is quite similar to that of a bibliophile about his or her library and to even what director David Cronenberg dreamt of as far back as the 1970's: I've always had my eye on personal movie use, on the idea that films could be like books, that you would have a library of movies that you take down and watch at your leisure".

now how long have I been saying this in these forums?

me and David in the same sentence? never happen in another million years.

I don't know if I'd buy the book but I would like to read it.

That's awesome that you are mentioned in it but why do they call you "Gut". I'd much rather have my real name mentioned in a book that a name where nobody would know who you are.

Disappointing that the cover features a rinky-dink TV monitor, and, worse of all, the film is in FULLSCREEN !!!

Congrats - when are you appearing on Letterman?

By the way, I keep a copy of that NY Times article handy, so when friends stop by and make some wiseass comment about how the DVDs have taken over my apartment, I can prove that there's actually some people out there crazier than me.

Way to go, gut.

Yes, I've heard you use the "DVD collection as film library" argument (?) many times, and I agree with you (and Mr. Cronenberg) 100%. My personal film library is as important to me as my book library.

No comment on the hideous shag rug or tacky waiting-room-style couch?

this sounds like shameless promotion for a book not affiliated with DVD Talk and i thought that was frowned upon here...

Congratulations gut! That book cover is going to kill popular sales though. Yeesh. It looks like something I would not pay a dollar for at a garage sale.

Thanks, Loc Nar!

I would have prefered another cover also....but for the most part, this book will be directed twords libraries of film schools and other universities.

If it seems I'm bragging in a bad manner, I aplogize. I guess maybe I am when it comes to my passion for buliding my dvd/film library. if someone wants to write a little bit about it in a book or a newspaper....great. it speaks for all collectors of film...regardless of the format.

Congrats, Gut. And don't worry about these schmucks who are trying to bring you down a peg. They clearly lead sad lives that only hold meaning when they're taking cheapshots at strangers safely behind their computer monitors.
