Infernal Affairs: SE availability

Infernal Affairs is a title I stumbled across after clicking on the link "customers who liked this title also chose...." I think I was reading a review for "hero" or something similar.

after reading Carl Davis's dvdtalk review of the 2 disc SE dts version, I realized the film was something I had to see for myself.. after stopping by best buy and being informed they only stocked the single disc version, I went online to find more dissapointment.. it seems that the sites (limited in number.. couldn't find it on amazon, best buy, circuitcity) that do carry the dts version are all out of stock.

so why is this movie so hard to get a hold of? because it's foreign, very popular, christmas season, out of print altogether, etc? I'd love to see the dts version of the film, even off of a blind buy. I'd appreciate any help

The 2-disc SE is from Hong Kong, so you'll have to buy it from an international DVD shop. You should ask in the International forum for pointers to trustworthy stores.

the review you read must have been for an import version of the dvd. the only us release is of the single disc version that you saw in best buy

the review was posted here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=11354 compared to the single disc version sold in the U.S., it looks much better, and worthy of my first "international blind buy"

I've never bought a dvd from outside the U.S., thanks for the advice Hackmann.

and now i hear it's a trilogy.. my head is really spinning.

WilliSy7,

Infernal Affairs II & III is out on dvd right now and there's even a boxset containing all 3 films. I heard someone say that there is a cut of all 3 films put together but still have to hear any confirmation of this.

Nevertheless, Infernal Affairs II is like the Godfather Part 2...it shows the rise of the Triad and the origins of the characters in Part I.

Part III is pretty much the conclusion (or sequel) to Part I which features the surviving character's story and the additional characters that show up to make his life a living hell.

Part II actually does a great job in expanding the whole Infernal Affairs universe as it goes along the "epic" route while Part III, I personally found, the weaker one, but nevertheless very worthwhile.

I have the IA delux box set. There is a disc (well, 2 actually) containing the entire trilogy recut as one long movie with the shots arranged in chronological order (since all films contain many flashbacks and the second film is a prequel to the first). I also have all 3 films in their special edition original releases. I've been toying with the idea of selling them as a set, but I'm haven't decided yet.

I just popped 3 of the discs in my Region 1 player and they worked, so I would assume it's ALL region.

well now that ive seen that damn picture im tempted to blind buy the whole trilogy =).. im glad to hear parts II and III are good films as well, I wouldn't want to spend the extra $ on weak sequels..

from the website it says the set is region 3. at the bottom of the website it claims you cannot return the set if it does not play, and clearly states it is an R3 set. im guessing that it plays on triggers player because it is region free?? could i somehow check to see if my dvd player region free by looking at the back of it or something..

I know people here claim it plays on there Region 1 DVD players but the 8-disc box set only plays on my Region free player, when I I put a disc in my regular Sony it does not play.

And the box set looks even better in-person

My region 1 player is a Sony as well and won't play any non region 1 or 0 discs I own. It played the discs from this box set though.

I just popped in the first disc from the LE box set and it played fine on my unmodified Denon player.

Supposedly the LE box set was ultralimited to 3,000 sets worldwide. If you pre-ordered, the set would come with your name on an engraved nameplate. Miramax has the region 1 rights to IA 1 (if not all three) and has seriously come down on sites that were selling the HK version so if you want the LE, you should get it wherever you can find it. IA#1 was very good and IA#2 was FANTASTIC. IA#3 was a bit of a letdown for me.

Last thing, if you wanna keep your budget in check, forget this whole thread and just wait for the R1s. Seriously, you do NOT want to get into Korean, Japanese and HK LEs.

I rented this movie a week ago, and it is in my top 10. I hope 2 and 3 are anywhere as good, because if they are, it might become my favorite trilogy. WOW, what a fantastic first movie.

I spotted a copy of the LE set in a shop in the Boston Chinatown the other day, if anyone in the area needs it I can point you in the direction.
