Are you going to collect the same movies with BlueRay, or HD-DVD format?

If it actually takes off... and the image is significantly better and worth the upgrade... some of my movies I'll upgrade. But I'll hold on to most of my DVD's since they're still compatable. And I doubt I'll ever upgrade my TV DVD's... which I'll take to my grave.

first of all, whatever format will/should prevail they better give us backward compatibility, I'll never buy a machine not playing my DVD's and CD's.
Then I doubt HD will be that better to justify an upgrade of my whole collection as I did when DVD's came around. DVD was a real quality leap forward.

Not my whole collection, just those major movies : LOTR, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones, HP and others....No need to get a HD copy of the other stuff.

Probably 50-75% of my collection does not need to be upgraded. Dramas will almost never need to be upgraded. Just the special effects movies and movies with great scenery and cinematography would be upgraded.

There are still so many undetermined elements out there, namely:
Prices of players
Backward compatibility of players
Prices of HD Discs
Prices of SD Discs
Any extra features on the HD discs
Possibility of better re-encoded audio tracks (higher bit rate)
Simultaneous release of SD & HD discs (for new releases)
I'm going to wait for a true universal player (HD-DVD, SD-DVD,SACD, DVD-A, Divx, XivD, etc.) around $350, and even then only if disc prices are the same as current discs, so I can get new releases around $15.
I'll need to see with my own the difference between SD & HD before I double dip on anything I currently own. New releases will depend on price differential, extras, and simultaneous release. Analagous to the SuperBit dvds released by Columbia now.

Whatever I don't have when I switch that I want, I'll buy in HD, obviously.
As for double-dipping -- not really, but there'll be some. For example, I'd really like to own Se7en, Raiders, Toy Story, or Pulp Fiction in HD. But I wouldn't be too fused on The Rules Of the Game or MASH.
I can presume this will be the stance with most sane people.

I'll rebuy only those films that I especially like (3+ stars) that have meaningful new extras such as commentaries, director interviews, or isolated scores.

Eventually, when they are the same price as current DVDs (under $15) I may upgrade the rest.

Too many threads like this popping up lately.
Regardless, too many unanswered questions to give a definitive answer.
I am sure many of us will change our stances once we see actual reviews of these new technologies.

I doubt it would even be possible to upgrade the majority of my titles. I don't see HD-DVD releases of many of my genre horror titles happening any time soon, theres still so many that need to get regular Dvd releases.
