If you like Seven, then you'll like Saw. Definitely.

This is absolutley untrue. Seven had great directing, writing, and acting. Saw had none of those. Similar plots don't equal similar quality. I'd definatley rent it first.

Plus, I think your tolerance for gore is more of a concern with this one than your tolerance for 'horror'. If gore turns you off, you may even want to skip the rental.

I'm also going to agree with RyoHazuki's disagreement. I love Seven, but I thought Saw was pretty awful.

If you like well made, well acted films, then you probably won't like Saw. It has an interesting concept, but its execution is fairly poor.

I say watch it. I liked it alot. Its different than most of the stuff out there currently. I'll buy it the first day for sure. If you have doubts, rent it.

Don't listen to all of us. Judge it for yourself. I think you'll like it.

Gory, say you?
I haven't seen the film, but I assume that it was R in theaters; I heard it first got rated NC-17, and material had to be cut. Why isn't the upcoming release uncut?

Some people do watch movies just to enjoy the entertainment...not to critique every little thing about the movie.

I am not opposed to Gore at all, but I don't really like Horror.

After reading reviews, I realized the movie might not be great (some would say it's not even good) and I wasn't trying to compare it to Seven in terms of caliber.

I was merely trying to decide if it leans more to the horror genre or the gore/suspense genre. If it's horror, I wouldn't even attempt it.

The gory reputation for Saw was mostly false hype, at least compared to most horror films that I'd call gory. I didn't think it was any more gory than Se7en or Silence of the Lambs. It's a fairly standard Hollywood style thriller with a twist, imo. The plot twists more than the Taking Lives kind of thriller, but not that much more.

People get weird about what counts as horror or not("supernatural thrillers" etc) but I'd say Saw is far closer to Se7en and Silence of the Lambs in content and intent than the Halloween type of slasher. Not in terms of quality of course, but it's still worth a watch.

Ditto. I was so psyched to see this movie after reading early reviews and was fairly dissapointed. I could not get past the incredibly bad acting. I may rent it to see if there was something I missed the first time around but I doubt I will buy it.

Dang, why all the bad vibes for this film? I mean we know it was bad acting and kind of a cheesy script, but I can think of many more bad popcorn films than this from 2004.

And don't forget it was made for only $1 million.

I thought it was pretty damn cool.

I think it was pretty decent, given the grass-roots / low budget nature of the movie... the twist was definitely worth watching the movie for too, it definitely grabbed me.

We might be able to tell you if you'd like it or not if you say what kind of comedies you like. That said, Saw had a better payoff at the end than Seven, which was pretty predictable.

Saw was mediocre at best in my opinion .

It had the most godawful acting I've ever seen, and as the plot developed, I found I dind't even care about the characters.

Also, the "great unseen twist" is a bunch of shit. It doesnt matter at all. Itd be really cool if we had sme more character background about the twist, but meh.

Also, the last line? So fucking cheseey.

Saw was one of the 10 best movies of the last year. I truly do not understand all the negative comments towards the movie. It is strongly in the vein of "Seven", but with a lesser quality of actor and budget. That being said, unlike Seven, it is clever and not predicatable. Nowadays, there are very few movie scripts that I can't predict the ending to way before the final reel hits. Saw is the exception. It has a great ending that stays true to the rules established by the film.

I am looking forward to buying this movie as well as the sequel due out later this year.

And for the majority of people out there it is absolutely fair to say, if you liked "Seven" then you will like saw.

all this talk about the bad acting. I assume everyone is talking about Cary Elwes.... Thats crap. If you get into the movie you will believe his and everyones performance. It may be akward to watch someone be that desparate, but I thought he did great. (I tried to make that as non-specific as possible)

He never asked if anyone thought it was GOOD. He asked which category it beter fell in. That would be Thriller. Just kind of gruesome thriller.
