Saw

Movies I like:

Silence of the Lambs
Seven
Pretty much any thriller type movie.

Movies I don't like:

Halloween
Friday the 13th
Pretty much any horror type movie.

Would I like Saw?

Stew

honking 01-05-05 01:49 PM

nope, but I liked it alright... :)

LorenzoL 01-05-05 02:00 PM

Another vote for no.

BTW, you should be asking this question in the movie forum.

spartanstew 01-05-05 02:19 PM

Oh, yeah you're right. I was reading about the upcoming DVD release and came here.

I liked it and will buy it on day 1. Seen it a few times already, good little flick.

jmj713 01-05-05 03:44 PM

If you like Seven, then you'll like Saw. Definitely.

This is absolutley untrue. Seven had great directing, writing, and acting. Saw had none of those. Similar plots don't equal similar quality. I'd definatley rent it first.

What he said.

Plus, I think your tolerance for gore is more of a concern with this one than your tolerance for 'horror'. If gore turns you off, you may even want to skip the rental.

I'm also going to agree with RyoHazuki's disagreement. I love Seven, but I thought Saw was pretty awful.

jaeufraser 01-05-05 07:06 PM

If you like well made, well acted films, then you probably won't like Saw. It has an interesting concept, but its execution is fairly poor.

SuckaMC 01-05-05 07:25 PM

I say watch it. I liked it alot. Its different than most of the stuff out there currently. I'll buy it the first day for sure. If you have doubts, rent it.

Don't listen to all of us. Judge it for yourself. I think you'll like it.

natevines 01-05-05 08:25 PM

Gory, say you?
I haven't seen the film, but I assume that it was R in theaters; I heard it first got rated NC-17, and material had to be cut. Why isn't the upcoming release uncut?

Some people do watch movies just to enjoy the entertainment...not to critique every little thing about the movie.

spartanstew 01-05-05 09:32 PM

I am not opposed to Gore at all, but I don't really like Horror.

After reading reviews, I realized the movie might not be great (some would say it's not even good) and I wasn't trying to compare it to Seven in terms of caliber.

I was merely trying to decide if it leans more to the horror genre or the gore/suspense genre. If it's horror, I wouldn't even attempt it.

The gory reputation for Saw was mostly false hype, at least compared to most horror films that I'd call gory. I didn't think it was any more gory than Se7en or Silence of the Lambs. It's a fairly standard Hollywood style thriller with a twist, imo. The plot twists more than the Taking Lives kind of thriller, but not that much more.

People get weird about what counts as horror or not("supernatural thrillers" etc) but I'd say Saw is far closer to Se7en and Silence of the Lambs in content and intent than the Halloween type of slasher. Not in terms of quality of course, but it's still worth a watch.

Ditto. I was so psyched to see this movie after reading early reviews and was fairly dissapointed. I could not get past the incredibly bad acting. I may rent it to see if there was something I missed the first time around but I doubt I will buy it.

So untrue that I'm almost offended.

steebo777 01-06-05 07:25 AM

Dang, why all the bad vibes for this film? I mean we know it was bad acting and kind of a cheesy script, but I can think of many more bad popcorn films than this from 2004.

Fincher Fan 01-06-05 07:28 AM

And don't forget it was made for only $1 million.

Yocke 01-06-05 08:17 AM

I thought it was pretty damn cool.

ShagMan 01-06-05 08:22 AM

I think it was pretty decent, given the grass-roots / low budget nature of the movie... the twist was definitely worth watching the movie for too, it definitely grabbed me.

MrE 01-06-05 09:00 AM

We might be able to tell you if you'd like it or not if you say what kind of comedies you like. That said, Saw had a better payoff at the end than Seven, which was pretty predictable.

Thunderball 01-06-05 09:30 AM

Saw was mediocre at best in my opinion .

It had the most godawful acting I've ever seen, and as the plot developed, I found I dind't even care about the characters.

Also, the "great unseen twist" is a bunch of shit. It doesnt matter at all. Itd be really cool if we had sme more character background about the twist, but meh.

Also, the last line? So fucking cheseey.

MKSilv 01-06-05 09:40 AM

Saw was one of the 10 best movies of the last year. I truly do not understand all the negative comments towards the movie. It is strongly in the vein of "Seven", but with a lesser quality of actor and budget. That being said, unlike Seven, it is clever and not predicatable. Nowadays, there are very few movie scripts that I can't predict the ending to way before the final reel hits. Saw is the exception. It has a great ending that stays true to the rules established by the film.

I am looking forward to buying this movie as well as the sequel due out later this year.

And for the majority of people out there it is absolutely fair to say, if you liked "Seven" then you will like saw.

SuckaMC 01-06-05 09:42 AM

all this talk about the bad acting. I assume everyone is talking about Cary Elwes.... Thats crap. If you get into the movie you will believe his and everyones performance. It may be akward to watch someone be that desparate, but I thought he did great. (I tried to make that as non-specific as possible)

He never asked if anyone thought it was GOOD. He asked which category it beter fell in. That would be Thriller. Just kind of gruesome thriller.

IDrinkMolson 01-06-05 10:13 AM

At the bare minimum, it's worth a rent.

I will probably buy once it hits $10, or 3 for $20.

That was another big problem I had with the film. Total bullshit ending. Like someone said earlier, no development at all for the ending. At least with Seven, there were some clues and motivation. Saw's ending was absolutley retarded and full of holes. Seven's ending drops a fat deuce all over Saw's ending.

Corvin 01-07-05 01:12 AM

I always thought a lot of the reasoning behind the Seven/Saw comparisons were because. . .
Spoiler:
both killers thought their murders were morally justified, not because of their endings. Saw has a twist ending; Seven does not. Fincher's film has a shocking ending, IMO, but it certainly isn't a twist. A twist would be like having Mills or Somerset be an accomplice or something.
That said, I think Seven is much better than Saw. So much so that the constant comparisons make me feel kind of sad.

DonnachaOne 01-07-05 08:11 AM

Hmm. Apparently, if my script is bad enough, my actors are bad enough and my budget is low enough, everyone will assume my film is great.

No. No, it is not. For some people, yes (rather unfortunately). But the majority? No.

SuckaMC 01-07-05 09:29 AM

well, I think the opinions vary enough that whoever hasn't seen it will just have to watch it and decide for themselves.

Save Ferris 01-07-05 09:32 AM

Saw was soooo awful. Its a downright comedy in parts, people were cracking up in many parts of the movie theater I saw it in. I hate movies that take HUGE shortcuts in common sense and SAW is one of the worst offenders.

Cops who dont even KNOW the BASIC rules to being a cop
silly 'evil genius' senarios that require the victim to play by the rules.
common sense thrown out the window whenever possible.
stupid impossible twist at the end
i could go on and on

Romerojpg 01-07-05 02:20 PM

I loved the film in its Uncut form thats for sure :) pity you americans got the hacked up edit, dont waste your cash on the american dvd! go elsewhere!

apart from that I really liked the film and I thought that ending was mindblowing! best thing in films for years!

scarredgod 01-07-05 02:35 PM

i thought Saw was great. poorly acted? absolutely, but then there arent many horror films that arent poorly acted. i thought it had genuinely creepy scenes, like the garage and the photographers apartment, and a great premise. plot holes? sure, but again, thats pretty common in horror films. there are an extreme few perfectly crafted horror films, this was very good for what it was. and i dont think the "twist" ending was impossible at all but i dont wanna get into spoilers.

 The director said less than 10 seconds were cut to get the R rating.

QuiGonJosh 01-07-05 05:43 PM

So wait...you don't like Halloween?

spartanstew 01-07-05 05:49 PM

Me?

No (although I've never seen it).
