wake of death is non anamorphic
I just bought Van Damme's new movie Wake Of Death and found out (much to my dismay) that wasnt anamorphic. Viewing it on my widescreen tv gives me 4 black bars. The case says 1.78:1 "4X3 Letterbox". However every review I've read of the movie (including the ones on this site) say its 16x9 enhanced.
Whats the deal here, is anyone's copy enhanced for widescreen tvs? I bought mine at circuit city in the USA. The bar code is 43396 06375 if that helps.

I guess the reviewer on this site is the one to get stuck into if it is not anamorphoc then! lets kill him! I have now canceled my order and wont bother at all with it till I get some confirmation it is anamorphic! I will just go to another region and get an anmorphic dvd instead!

I just find it so strange that the company that made the dvd would release it non 16/9 when its star is relying on these direct to video releases to continue his career. When was the last time a major dvd was non anamorphic anyway? The box also says mastered in high defination, who cares when it looks worse than 99% of dvds on a big tv.
This movie should be re-released with a new transfer and while we're at it where are the widescreen versions of timecop and sudden death?
Oh well, what are we doing buying these stupid van damme movies anyway

but I just found out I cannot cancel wake as its packing bugger
The thing is it will be anamprhic in another country and that 100% for sure so its a joke if they release it in america with a lesser transfer, guess I will watch it then Ebay it and wait for the UK version to come out

Can't help with the anamorphic/non-anamorphic question, but I was subjected to this film the other day and I'd recommend that everyone stay far, far away from it.
No matter the cinema scale - even the Van Damme/Seagal/Lundgren/etc. scale, it is 100% garbage - heck, even illegal drugs wouldn't enhance the cinematic experience. Though I tend towards diplomacy in my posting style, this time I can't help but say that anyone who likes this movie really.........oh, skip it...... - I'd bet that even most adult films feature finer examples of film-making than witnessed here.
The director did an awful job on every imaginable level. It's an action film amigo, drop the arthouse pretensions. The few action scenes were beyond boring with way too much slow-mo, quick-cuts, and a host of other issues. Heck, any given episode of Spongebob is quite likely to be more thrilling. Too much slo-mo (padding the 90 minute runtime?) in the whole movie as a matter of fact. Plus, I haven't seen this much bad acting in a movie in a very long while; porn actresses would look like Academy Award winners when compared to the woman who played Van Damme's wife in the movie. You know why Van Damme might look good, because nearly everyone else was incompetent. While the premise might have been okay, the execution was about as bad as it gets - brain-dead would be a step up. The movie was totally without suspense, and really had no flow whatsoever. The DVDTalk review, imho, is about as off-base as you can get. Though it's certainly not the case, after watching the movie and reading the review, the term "payola" can't help but come to mind.
Actually, I'm not wasting anymore time on this - you've been warned. I watch a lot of movies and this might have been the worst I saw in 2004.

You are not the only one. I'm also a Van Damme fan.
And yes, the movie is non-anamorphic.
