You can see the Unrated version on Cinemax!

Actually the Unrated version (TV-MA) is also being shown on Cinemax.

http://www.cinemax.com/apps/schedule...OCUS_ID=613246

However, they are showing the R-rated version on HBO.

ok, now I don't have the US disc to compare but the runtime on this disc title according to my players counter is 1:42:17sec. which includes the Lions Gate Logo at the beginning of the film all the way until right after the ContentFilm logo when the screen goes dark. this is when the title reverts back to the menu.

if you want I can time just the movie itself to get a closer estimate of total runtime of just the movie with no opening/closing logos.

again, I'm not really sure if this is/isn't a complete version as I don't have anything to compare with.

I have the Canadian release. I think the disk is actually the US disk. It's just the cover that's different.

well, 102 is what is listed all over the place for the 'R' rated, so i guess that is that. oh well, at least i got a good movie at a very good price!

maybe if someone who is out there and saw the actual 'Unrated' off one of those channels previously mentioned and maybe do a quickie compare to what was added...that would be cool.

"...what does that 18A or whatever that rating on the back of the 2nd mean?"

...erm... that is the movie's rating in Canada... (18A (in British Columbia) means that: "Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult." - the classification requirements differ from province to province - see list)

. . . . . .

As I've mentioned in this thread many times, Canada's rating system is completely different than the US system. There is no such thing as "UNRATED" in Canada. By law, every DVD released has to carry a rating here. I don't know if this new release is uncut, but if it is, it's perfectly possible that it was rated 18A by Canadian standards. The MPAA does not rate our films, and our standards are often different, especially regarding sex/nudity.

Good link, Hendrik, that should help explain things.

Off-hand, try the explicit sex scene.

I can't think of any violence that would've been trimmed, but it's possible. I only saw it once, but nothing stood out as the equivalent to the eye-popping thing from 'Casino'.

I used to think this too, but got totally thrown by the Canadian DodgeBall release. It's got a dual English and French cover, says it's "Unrated" and there isn't a Canadian rating anywhere on the cover or disc. I even double checked the shrinkwrap to see if there was a sticker on it, but nothing. First time I've ever seen a Canadian DVD with no rating whatsoever and I buy a lot of them each year. It's totally freaked me out!

"...It's the latter that caused director Wayne Kramer some trouble, with a scene indirectly depicting Macy performing oral sex on Bello drawing fire from the MPAA, which slapped the picture with an NC-17 until Kramer agreed to jettison a bare 1.5 seconds of footage. (The unedited version was screened for critics.) What seems revealing of the MPAA's mindset is not necessarily the content of that snippet of film — you see Macy's head moving past Bello's pubic hair — but the content of the longer shot that immediately precedes it, which holds on the face of a woman who's clearly experiencing intense pleasure..."

The shot of Macy's head moving past Bello's pubic hair is in the movie on the scandinavian dvd. Is that the footage that is missing from all other dvd releases?
yes, but as the article says..is that extended 1.5 seconds of Bello in heat there?

for all that cares, the "Director's Cut" is on Cinemax tonight/tomorrow morning @ 2:35am, Wed 2/8. I am all over it since the DC UR is not likely coming out in R1.

so can someone confirm that the US R1 disc is cut or uncut? new note has been added in imdb.com page:

UK DVD version is uncut.

however,wikipedia says:

Upon viewing the final cut, the MPAA gave The Cooler an NC-17 rating because of the glimpse of Maria Bello's pubic hair during the sex scene (source: This Film Is Not Yet Rated). An edited R rated version appeared in theaters. The director's cut, which includes the scenes cut from the original version, has been released on DVD and airs on cable.
so?

There is no uncut U.S. release. And IFC claims to be 'not rated' when it airs, but it is in fact the R rated version. I don't know about Cinemax and other channels which claim it is 'not rated' though.

But after seeing the R version on IFC. The missing shot is so brief,it barely makes a difference. So don't get stressed out that you're missing a 1-2 second shot of a vagina.

Maybe someday in the future, the uncut version would get released in the U.S. But the cut is so small,I wouldn't go nuts over not having the unrated version.

Earlier this year IFC was airing the director's cut. This month however they are only airing the R rated version. At least that's according to the on screen guide description.
