My So Called Life?

hey everybody, i know theres a My So Called Life boxed set of the seasons 19 episodes, i am also aware of it being OOP. So the question is, besides spending a crazy amount on ebay for the set, are there any online stores or someone selling it at a reasonable price?

joshualane 12-28-04 06:24 PM

Your best bet is to search some physical retail stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, Suncoast, etc) to see if they still have copies in stock. Most (if not all) of the major online retailers are out.

Gizmo 12-28-04 06:48 PM

Ive seen this at a ton of places. Shouldnt be to hard to track down.

Cameron 12-28-04 10:48 PM

same as above....seen it in half a dozen stores...this is one that will fetch big money i would expect after the market dries up...cult fanbase to say the least

sxwxs 12-28-04 11:52 PM

thanks guys, ill check out the surrounding stores this weekend.

TheHistorian 12-29-04 02:39 PM

I thought this was going to be another lunchbox thread...

can you name the 6 stores? i had thought these were exhausted several, several months ago. saying you saw them at so and so and not naming so and so, really doesn't do much. please actually verify so peeps aren't going on wild goose chases. thanks.

for instance...

critterdvd 12-29-04 06:33 PM

My Local Wherehouse Music Store, usually has a set or two, for about $40 to $50. I bought the set years ago, fiasco and all. Now I wish you could get a rerelease like "freaks and geeks" but I know to file that one under "holey grail that i'll never see".

dstrauss 12-29-04 06:55 PM

I saw at least one copy at Best Buy here in Orlando last week, didn't think anything of it.

listing 6 stores, doesn't warrant confirmation. BB doesn't even list on site anymore, doubt there's anyway these stores would have them

Tarantino 12-29-04 07:23 PM

So get up from your computer desk and go search for it. Jesus.

SFranke 12-29-04 07:27 PM

You're a tough man to please, Scott1598.

Cameron 12-29-04 07:28 PM

Tarantino 12-29-04 08:40 PM

While you're at it guys, I'm looking for some stuff too.

sxwxs 12-31-04 06:03 PM

hey there, ive checked all the stores around here. zip, zero, nothing. no one has it. hope to someday find this at a reasonable price, i kick myself now for passing it up all those times i saw it in bestbuy.

OldBoy 01-03-05 06:38 PM

Got a ?...all the eps (19) are on 5 discs...how many eps. are on one disc, about 4? and they are what 47 minutes per ep?

also, did they change any of the music in any eps...like they have done on recent TV DVD Sets? one ep that i need to have in tact is Angela's lip sych to "Blister in the Sun" by Violent Femmes...please tell me that is still there!!!

thanks in advance.

No music was deleted or changed. They announced at the time that they were able to keep the music because the original clearances included other medium releases. I always thought this was odd as every other show from that time period has music clearance issues.

Cameron 01-03-05 10:41 PM

i looked around again for you guys...even had someone call the store looking for it...told them i was sold out, another dvdtalker beat them to the punch

sxwxs 01-04-05 12:47 AM

well, i got to look around some more today and again no luck. one day i hope to find it.

garmonbozia 01-04-05 10:38 AM

wow, i had no idea that this was even out of print....
when did that happen?

fnordboy 01-04-05 10:55 AM

Quite awhile ago. There was only a small window of production time before the rights reverted back to Buena Vista.

OldBoy 01-04-05 11:10 AM

I got one!!

"I found them, repeat I found them!" to quote a line from ESB or rather I got one!

So I made calls to all these Best Buy's and Suncoast's in TN. I got close with only one store saying they just sold the last one the day before I called. Then I use the next on the drop down and begin to call Suncoast's in TX. Sure enough I found a store somewhere in Somewhereville, TX and they are shipping it to my Suncoast in NY free and I will have it for MSRP!! Seeing as how they are selling for upwards of $200 on eBay i got lucky.

I am so freggin happy and can't wait to watch all the eps. in all their glory and then cherish it as part of my small, but I like it collection.

fnordboy 01-04-05 11:49 AM

Congrats :)

Of course $200 is still cheaper than I ended up paying for them after the whole AU fiasco. Could have been worse though I guess...

What's the AU fiasco? Do you mind if I ask how much you did pay and was it new? I was bidding on a mint set that finally sold for $215, i expect that was good, no?
how is the set overall and do the eps. still hold up? i can't wait...

Long story short the My So-Called Life DVDs came out originally through the store Another Universe only, to get it you had to preorder it and then they decided we needed to pay up front. It came with a lunchbox to hold the DVDs and a bonus disc. The store started double billing people, and some of us lucky ones even got triple billed, some people got some of their money back, some got all, and some got none. It is a whole long story full of delays, lies, etc. Eventually I was able to get one of my extra charges refunded, but still ended up paying double, so roughly $230. I did get the lunchbox and the bonus disc eventually though.

Basically the company was ripping people off and Ross Rojek just recently ended up going to prison on unrelated charges. You can see the whole saga here at MSCL.com. There are also threads around here at DVDTalk 1 and 2

The DVDs are "ok". Menus are really crappy, quality is good enough, and there are the occasional typos. If you are a fan of the show the DVDs are worth it. There are threads over at MSCL.com that talk about the quality in depth.

Wow! I had no idea. And to think I passed this up in Best Buy not more than 7 months ago. Oh well. Should be mine soon and yes! i am a fan and still think it will come back!

OldBoy 01-10-05 05:09 PM

can someone tell me if the set is supposed to come with inserts in any of the 5 DVD's? Thanks.

GeoffreyL 01-10-05 05:41 PM

None of my five discs have one

OldBoy 01-10-05 05:45 PM

thanks geoffrey.

also, would the value of the set decrease that greatly if there is a very slight tear and crease on the side of the slipcase? we are talking slight, but noticeable.

Sid Ceaser 01-11-05 09:00 AM

Keep checking used record stores that sell used dvds.

I just picked up the box set at CD Spins in Harvard Square in Boston for 29.99. Aside from a few rounded corners on the outter box, everything is in tip-top shape.

used stores are a blessing.

CD Spins there is really good with used box set pricing. I got "Popular" there for 24.99 used, in great condition.

Gizmo 01-11-05 09:29 AM

WOW! My So-Called is going for THAT much? Looks like i'll be going to suncoast and bestbuy today and buying both copies.

Cameron 03-10-05 08:41 PM

Small heads up, the network Noggin (Nickelodeon type) runs MSCL at 2 am. I sold m DVD a few months ago for $170 (and bonus disc for $70!), and have been watchinf reruns n Noggin latley.

Cameron 03-11-05 07:20 AM

ebay links are against the rules...especially when you only have ten post to your name
