Why do I keep buying them...
...when I have hundreds of hours of unwatched DVDs in my collection. This does not include commentaries, which I plan on watching, too. This does include TV series that I have not seen as of yet, such as Buffy and The Shield(thank you Fox season 1 sale).
Xmas just made me even further behind, with movies such as Collateral, Bourne Supremacy, Shaun of the Dead, Spiderman2, and Kill Bill 2...which are all new to me. Damnit. I just can't stay away. I have some serious movie watchin' to do. Gotta go. |
just get in 3 a day
Well, it does grant you immortality.... ;)
Hehe I am just like you, but I buy them because they are cheap or I get as gifts. Before when I had no job I could spend half the day watching a whole season of a tv series, now i'm lucky if I can finish a season in a week.
If you quit your job, that's an extra 8 hours of movie watching a day. Also, a catheter will save you a surprising amount of time throughout the day.
Gotta be disciplined. Get up early, watch one before work. Start watching as soon as you get home. Skip a few hours sleep each night so you can watch another one ...
Not that I speak from personal experience, of course. |
The trick is to get a portable DVD player and just watch movies from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. If you can afford it, wear goggles that have a TV screen in it and plug them into a 400-disc DVD changer you wear in a backpack.
Shaun of The Dead has a FANTASTIC cast commentary. I'd def recommended that commentary..... Sorry about your luck, now I just ruined it even further by telling you about the fantastic commentary. Great selection of movies there tho. I own them all :)
Uggg, I totally agree. I have at least 50 I haven't watched, yet continue to buy. Sad, really.
One thing you could do is...STOP BUYING THEM...maybe...ya know... ;)

well i am just like you, still have not watched alien quadrilogy, the ultimate oliver stone collection, the matrix collection, god knows how many movies still have not been watched but yet i keep buying.
To me, "owning" does not equate to "needing to watch", so I also have a few hundred titles that I haven't gotten to. Yet. I like being able to have a choice when I go to watch a movie. Will I ever catch up? Who knows. Does it matter? No. Am I still having a good time? Yes.
There probably 10-15 $5.88 Wal-Mart DVD's I have that I haven't watched and probably never will. They just seemed like a good value at the time. ;)
I've had the same problem, although in recent months, I've knocked down what would've been a backlog of well over 100 titles to about half of that.
My main problem is that I have a LOT of titles that are massive (i.e. TV shows). I mean, I just finished watching the Ken Burns' Baseball set, which is nearly a DAY's worth of watching and that only technically counts as one title. When I think of it like that, I don't feel as bad for having so many unwatched titles. But I have found that since getting my portable DVD player, I've been watching more. I don't know what it is, but the convience of just being able to watch a DVD wherever is appealing, and I'm using that even when I'm able to use one of my other players. Since getting it on Christmas, I've gone through the last four innings of Baseball, the last two discs of Sanford & Son S4, and most of Pride of the Yankees. |
I find that I don't have a lot of time, but I still pick up sets and movies to complete my collection. ie, the Alien Quadrilogy, I have watched each movie, but haven't dived into the extras yet, and with about 40 hours of them, I'm sure I'll get around to them at some point.
Watch the Shield right now. Then pick up the Wire season 1. That is all I have to say.
I'm waiting on the Wire Season 1...want season 2 to come out first so I can just do a big marathon...
I find that December/January and July/August are usually the best time to watch dvd's cause you can probably get 2/3 movies a night, or a disc or 2 of a tv show done in a single night, becuase there is nothing good on tv (usually).
Obviously you ain't got yer priorities straight. ;)
I have that problem also, I have 30 TV shows on DVD and only watched 3 of them, hell, I have no job and no school so I have plenty of time but don't watch them. I have around 115 DVDs and only watched 5 of them and for some reason, I like to collect more than watch them, I keep on buying and don't watch them.
I'm not as far behind on my DVD's as some of you but my queue list for what I need to watch I have:
TV Shows - Dick Van Dyke Seasons 3, 4, 5 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 7 King Of The Hill Season 3 Simpsons Season 5 (in the process of watching now) GI Joe Season 2 Part 1 Sex And The City Season Six Part Two I Love Lucy Season 2 The Flintstones Season 2 Movies- The Ultimate Matrix Box Set w/ Neo Bust Open Water Anchorman King Arthur Van Helsing Girl, Interrupted Ransom Resident Evil: Apocolypse I tells ya, it's really hard to keep up. But you keep buying just because you know there's more DVD's coming out, you have the money, and you need to keep up with the purchases because if you don't you'll fall behind even more! |
I quite buying DVDs after LOTR ROTK EE. It's great! I've got tons to watch and the impulse to buy more is zero. What makes this work is when you fill your DVD rack. The idea of buying yet another rack, assembling it, having it take up even more floor space, is always in the back of the mind when seeing DVDs.
because we are dumb!!
It's the life of a DVD collector
Making 2hrs in a day, couple of times a week to watch few movise isn't too hard, but making time to play my Xbox is much hardar. I have 10 unfinished games :(
About 20% of my collection has gone unwatched (meaning I've never seen the movie/TV show), but I'm using my semester break to catch up; until then, I'm not buying anymore DVDs that I haven't seen before. That's just me, though.
Too bad I go back to school in a hair under two weeks. |
Why? Because you can't STOP! They're like crack. DVDs are planning world domination!!11! :D
Initially, I used to take a portable DVD player to work and watch as much as I could at lunch. Then It caught on so well that I could actually have it playing while I was working. Stopping of course when whatever I was doing demanded 100% of my attention. My boss would actually watch with me at lunch. He understood my addiction and would have me pick him up "Tuesday-Titles" as well when I chose to shop at lunch rather than "watch".
I do it because I'm still building a library. others do it for whatever reason. until the library is close to complete....I'll keep buying.
I buy close to 10 a week, run my biz anywhere from 50 to 70 hours a week, and still have time to viddey. time management. a typical day would be: get up at 6:30am, work until 7pm, come home and either take the wife out to dinner or prepare it myself, relax and then have sex for a few hours....then watch dvds and work my library until about 2am. I usually get in 2 films and a little time on the computer. the key for me? keep the wife happy. the rest falls into place. |
I put it this way: DVD's are like alcohol, you can never have enough! Well...until you throw up, but that's a whole nother topic.
I have been so proud of myself, selling tons of DVDs (probably over 200) this year, yet the unwatched list and the total count is growing rapidly. I am kind of hoping for a deal dry spell. I try to get in two a night. I can usually watch 10 each week, but that is not enough since I may buy more than that some weeks. TV on DVD is what kills me. When I got Sopranos Season 1-4 I watched continually for almost two weeks. Put me way behind on movies.
I have that problem too, I guess Im just so determined to collect all the dvds on my wish list. I havent watched all the ones I bought yet. But I figure that if I can atleast watch my whole collection year after year then Im still entitled to buy dvds at will...even if it drives my mom crazy!

...is your wife aware of your sex olympics? :)....or am I not allowed to ask here? Pro-B |
I've never had that problem, but then again I've had a player since 1998 and only have 162 DVDs. :D
I just buy movies I really like and want to watch (usually right away). Never been much for "collecting" things. |
I have no idea what you fellows are complaining about. I don't think any of you have a problem.
Austin |
I have 829 and still counting every time I go out. 14% I haven't seen,16% I haven't watched since I got them on DVD. Just sad.

That's what gets to me about consumerism. You THINK you're getting a good deal, when you're inherently paying for something you're never gonna actually lose. That's why I never buy crap. |
I admit to have bought a few "bargain bin" films. There are some good finds out there, in my opinion. Resevior Dogs, Thin Red Line, To Live and Die in LA, Boondock Saints.....all great flicks.
I have hundreds of DVDs I haven't watched yet, but it doesn't me as I'm immortal and will live for thousands of years...:)
It's those damn commentaries & special features that are making me fall behind so badly, I doubt I'll ever catch up. |
