In the Twilight Zone...

With all the release dates for the Twilight Zone series, why hasn't the full motion picture from the 80's made it to DVD? It wasn't the most spectacular set of tales, but it did have some decent stories worthy of ownership. The whole tragic death of Vic Morrow in the helicopter accident would certainly make it a keepsake for those that enjoy his acting - it was his last film of course. But I liked the story of the old people that played kick the can and become young again. A lot of top shelf actors in that story - Don Amici, Scatman Crouthers, it would be a nice DVD to own. Anyone know why it's not out?

Some people believe that rragic accident is one thing keeping the film from being released. Regardless, this is a Universal property so they would be the ones to release it.

This is actually a Warner Bros. title. They released the VHS. There was a chat some months back and this title was asked about and no plans were being made for it.

See, that is a shame. I can understand the tragedy being something that would cause any comapny to be a bit apprehensive about releasing it, yet, they could have doen something nice, a commemorative edition, with extras that hightlighted his career or something. That would have doen it justice and allowed fans of the show/film to enjoy the motion picture as well. Those sort of issues for non-release
really get to me.

I don't know why they would be having cold feet now. The tragic accident sure didn't prevent them for releasing it to theaters twenty years ago.

Exactly. Everyone seems to mention this as why the DVD is not released, yet that doesn't explain the fact that it was released theatrically, to VHS, to laserdisc (twice), etc.

I don't know why Warner hasn't released it yet, but this can't be the reason.

If they were smart they would either release it the same day as one of the other seasons coming up in 05 or they would release it somewhat close to the last season being released in December 05. I too would really like to see this done!

i think it is the idea of any residual money has to go to the families...at the same time they have to do any paperwork needed...this drums up old feelings...blah blah blah..........like a new funeral everytime you put out a home video version

But, again... why is that an issue now? 2 decades later?

This situation didn't prevent them from releasing it theatrically shortly after the event itself. It didn't stop the VHS/LD release. It was then remastered and re-released on LD years later. And the VHS has always (to my knowledge) remained in print, with occasional repackagings.

To suggest that there is suddenly some sort of concern/controversy over a DVD release doesn't really wash with me. The tragedy has never prevented any release before (including, as mentioned, frequent cable TV airings).

Honestly, I don't know. I wish it were here just as much as anybody. This is the only thing I can think of why it wouldn't be here by now...Hopefully it will get a release to tie in with a TZ season set...or even the Wars of the Worlds remake that is shortly ahead of us. Keep making noise and it will happen.

For more info on the tragedy of the TZ movie a brief review at www.spielbergfilms.com

I don't know why it hasn't been released yet, but don't assume that just because it's on VHS and TV they can release it on DVD. Remember how Grease was stuck in legal limbo a few years ago, even though it was on VHS and TBS showed it all the time?

Not that this is by any means an indication on whether a DVD will be released or not.

But, Warner does have this practice where they put the newer WB opening title infront of movies they remaster.

This title isn't one of them, so they might have yet to do any work on this title.

Odds are, its the people involved in making this film the reason why it hasnt been released (Dante, Landis, Spielberg). Odds are WB would like to have them put some input into the DVD.

Any other Canadians (in the Toronto area) having trouble finding the Original Series Season 1 box-set anywhere? Bay Street Video and HMV were expecting it Jan.4th, but received nothing. And Best Buy and Future Shop claim they didn't know about it.

I was hoping to get this box-set since December 28th (sigh).

I'm in the middle of watching the New Twilight Zone boxed set from the mid 80's and it's great stuff too. Look for a review later this week.

I went to HMV looking for the Definitive season one edition, but found the 80's season one box set instead. I read the glowing review on here before hand, so buying it was a no brainer.
