Do U Buy or Rent?

I just have a lil over 40 dvd's, usually buy them for bargin bins at my local movie store and rent alot of dvd's. But if the rented dvd's are great I'll go buy the dvd! What about you guys?

Tarantino 12-25-04 03:23 PM

Welcome to the forum. You'll learn that mostly everyone here buys.

With sweet deals on most new releases, you can buy a DVD for the cost of 3 rentals most of the time.

About 30% of my DVD's are blind buys (bought unseen).

blindrocket 12-25-04 03:37 PM

I do both.
Buy my must-haves and rent the rest.
My GuzzleFish link is terribly inaccurate but I have a lot of must-haves. :D

Cygnet74 12-25-04 03:45 PM

i buy dvds for the films or filmmakers i admire (just added two Ingmar Bergman box sets), and rent dvds of films by filmmakers I'm new too (recently, Henry Jaglom, Eric Rohmer and Hal Hartley) or if it's something i'm not too sure about or that i know i wouldn't likely watch for a second time.

68ShelbyGT500KR 12-25-04 04:08 PM

I buy 98% of my DVD's new. I only buy if there is a better price at a B&M, otherwise I wait until DDD has their sale. I usually don't but New Releases with the most recent exeption being ELF, but that was during the sale. I think I only have 2 DVD's that I bought PV(The Rookie and A Beautiful Mind). I prefer, if buying used, to have the orignal case and cover art. I will buy only DVD's that are OAR.

Rentals are only when I have a BB or Hollywood Video coupon. Like the coupons for .99/each or rent one /rent one free coupon

asianxcore 12-25-04 04:09 PM

For the most part I just buy. The only time I rent something is if someone recommends that I see a certain movie and I'm not completely sure on it. Also a local video store on Sundays has 2 for 2 rental sales so that always helps.

Maxflier 12-25-04 04:16 PM

I buy pretty much anything i want to see, because if i am going to spend 5 bucks to rent it i would just as soon pay the 15-20 to own it.

Jackskeleton 12-25-04 04:24 PM

Mainly buy.

MasterofDVD 12-25-04 04:24 PM

I buy most every TV set I want because they are my new weakness. I started up with Netflix again recently so I've been renting far more the past 2 months then I have in ages.

I bought MANY movie sight unseen in the past but hopefully I can rent first now and make a better choices about what I buy.

nightmaster 12-25-04 04:39 PM

I mainly buy as well, but have a subscription to Netflix to rent stuff that I either haven't seen or am waiting for the price to buy to drop. My buying habit is usually to pick 'em up when the MSRP drops, at the pawn shops or during previously viewed sales at the big name rental chains. I will on occasion jump on a new release, regardless of the price, when I can't stand not to see it ;)

lopper 12-25-04 04:49 PM

I mostly just buy, but I got a card at Blockbuster a few months ago so I've been renting a few titles here and there.

Mopower 12-25-04 05:05 PM

I buy used DVD's from a local video store. Usually a month after the new releases come out they have them for $10 a piece. And I have Netflix.

antennaball 12-25-04 05:29 PM

Haven't rented a DVD in close to three years. Strictly buy.

Neuman 12-25-04 05:38 PM

Haven't rented in years either.

The Infidel 12-25-04 05:54 PM

Ditto. I can't remember the last time I rented. What's weird is I recently realized just how many movies in my collection are actually blind buys. You would think I would rent first, but I pretty much will buy a movie if I'm fairly certain I'll like it. It may be a long, long time before I watch it a second time, but I've never gotten rid of anything I've bought (unless it's to upgrade to a special edition or something).

gutwrencher 12-25-04 06:03 PM

I never rent. would defeat the purpose of building a library. below is a slice from the NY Times article from last Febuary...the one in which I was interveiwed:

I Don't Rent. I Own.

By WILSON ROTHMAN
Published: February 26, 2004

"EVERY night at his home in Des Moines, Todd Robertson watches a couple of DVD movies. Every few months he queues up a themed marathon he says might last 24 hours. His favorite genre is Italian horror, but he's got a whole world of cinema to choose from: at last count he owned 1,462 titles, although by now the number is probably higher."

I'd say the header says it all. at least I've moved over 1,800 since then. thought it would be higher by now.

Shagrath 12-25-04 06:10 PM

I buy exclusively. I can't tell you when the last time I rented a movie was.

TomOpus 12-25-04 09:05 PM

Yep, I only buy. It's been over 3 years since I've rented.

Fok 12-25-04 09:11 PM

Mainly buy, prices aren't too bad. Most of the time I see the film on the big screen first then decide whether to buy it.

spartanstew 12-25-04 10:02 PM

I'm a member of Blockbuster online rental club and I usually watch about 3-4 rentals per month. I also buy about 3-4 DVD's per month. It's rare that I'll buy a movie after I rent it. Usually I just rent the movies that I know I probably won't want to watch more than once.

natevines 12-25-04 10:04 PM

I'm a collector, so no, I never rent. Last time I did must've been before DVDs were around.

LorenzoL 12-25-04 10:21 PM

I mainly buy most of my DVDs however I still occasionally rent them also. I don't have the budget to blind buy movies that I may end up not liking.

 Exactly what i do.

Cameron 12-25-04 10:24 PM

never rent anymore...no need to

cupon 12-25-04 10:36 PM

I've never rented a DVD and I never will.

Dabaomb 12-25-04 11:15 PM

I mainly buy but I should rent more cuz I've had some pretty bad blind buys.

marty888 12-25-04 11:55 PM

In August '02 I took advantage of the Blockbuster deal ($19.95 for a month, one DVD a day) and caught up on 23 titles I was somewhat interested in seeing but hesitant to buy. Of those, I ended up subsequently buying 4.

That was the last time I rented. I'm thinking about doing the $14.95 monthly deal for a month to catch up on several titles that have come out since then that I'm not sure I want to buy - or, in some cases, not even sure I want to see them but curious about them.

Meanwhle, I've had no problem finding tons of stuff to add to my collection, with virtually no "buyer regret".

steebo777 12-25-04 11:57 PM

I buy only.

johnbook 12-26-04 01:12 AM

That's exactly why i would never blind buy a movie just too many crappy movies out there in my opinion that i would never watch again so i don't see the point of owning it, so i guess i'm a renter and if i like it i wait for my local family video to sell it for $9.95 (usually in about 3 weeks from it's release date), i guess i'm particular about my collection i only want movies that i know i would watch again, rented King Arthur the other day and loved it so in a couple weeks that will be mine for $9.95, also within the last week i rented Envy and could not imagine that piece of crap on my shelf, so i say renting first is the way to go. IMO.

DVD Polizei 12-26-04 01:18 AM

I have found that since I don't go to the theater anymore, I tend to rent the newer releases unless I'm confident in the director of the movie or the actors in it. Independent or foreign movies I don't bother and I just buy those because opinions on these genres vary so much it's pretty ridiculous.

nightshadebooks 12-26-04 01:44 AM

I buy movies, and Netflix tv stuff.

Brian Shannon 12-26-04 09:41 AM

I buy what I like to watch repeatedly.

I have never rented and I never will.

Altimus Prime 12-26-04 10:04 AM

I've had my first DVD player going on two years now. And in all that time, I have never rented a single DVD. I've bought only. And I'm up to 72 titles.

I may have developed an aversion to renting DVDs. I'm worried of getting dirty or otherwise messed up discs that will muck up or damage my player.

I'm not big on "blind buys." I buy old favorites, and newer movies I've seen and really enjoyed. The closest I got to a blind buy was Scarface, which I wanted after seeing bits and pieces on TBS or TNN or something like that.

kitkat 12-26-04 11:38 AM

I Netflix like crazy and try to buy what only what I think will have replay value for me. It would cost way too much for me to see everything I want to see if I bought. That, and I'd have nowhere to put it.

matome 12-26-04 11:56 AM

I buy all my DVD's with about 50% of them blind.

Al Padrino 12-26-04 02:11 PM

With the Internet, newspapers, magazines and other outlets for news and research, you never really have to make a blind buy. I've been in situations where I came across a title I had never seen or heard much about, but sounded good, and being in a position where I didn't have the luxury of researching it for whatever reason. But in most cases, I have plenty of time to read up on the film, the DVD, and various opinions from critics, word of mouth, and the 'net.

And I don't rent, either. My girlfriend does, as do some of my friends, but those are the only instances in which I'm even privy to a rented disc.

n0fear88 12-26-04 02:20 PM

Buy all of em, never rented, never will :|

I buy. If I do not like the DVD I will sell it.

atlantamoi 12-26-04 05:28 PM

I'm totally opposite of most people here. I'm a renter. I almost never buy. I have Netflix and am totally satisfied with three movies a week. I watch movies I've never seen before (either new or very old) and can do that endlessly for a fraction of buying new. There just aren't very many movies I want to see a second or third time over a new rental. I do own movies that I love (comedies are the best replays to me), but I don't really want to build up a collection that just sits there while I continue renting for less than $2.00 a disc. If I had an endless cash flow then I'd be likely to own more. Maybe not. During the recent Blockbuster $8.00 trade-in I got rid of half my collection and don't regret it.

I understand the aspect of having a library. It's a cool thing, but I do that with music. Much more of a replay value to me. I was in Target today with a gift card and looked over the DVDs. All I could see was row after row after row of movies I've seen where I would do nothing but fidget having to see it a second time. Even decent movies. I only own 33 DVDs and only see myself adding a couple a year to that.
