Do U Buy or Rent?

I just have a lil over 40 dvd's, usually buy them for bargin bins at my local movie store and rent alot of dvd's. But if the rented dvd's are great I'll go buy the dvd! What about you guys?

Tarantino 12-25-04 03:23 PM

Welcome to the forum. You'll learn that mostly everyone here buys.

With sweet deals on most new releases, you can buy a DVD for the cost of 3 rentals most of the time.

About 30% of my DVD's are blind buys (bought unseen).

blindrocket 12-25-04 03:37 PM

I do both.
Buy my must-haves and rent the rest.
My GuzzleFish link is terribly inaccurate but I have a lot of must-haves. :D

Cygnet74 12-25-04 03:45 PM

i buy dvds for the films or filmmakers i admire (just added two Ingmar Bergman box sets), and rent dvds of films by filmmakers I'm new too (recently, Henry Jaglom, Eric Rohmer and Hal Hartley) or if it's something i'm not too sure about or that i know i wouldn't likely watch for a second time.

68ShelbyGT500KR 12-25-04 04:08 PM

I buy 98% of my DVD's new. I only buy if there is a better price at a B&M, otherwise I wait until DDD has their sale. I usually don't but New Releases with the most recent exeption being ELF, but that was during the sale. I think I only have 2 DVD's that I bought PV(The Rookie and A Beautiful Mind). I prefer, if buying used, to have the orignal case and cover art. I will buy only DVD's that are OAR.

Rentals are only when I have a BB or Hollywood Video coupon. Like the coupons for .99/each or rent one /rent one free coupon

asianxcore 12-25-04 04:09 PM

For the most part I just buy. The only time I rent something is if someone recommends that I see a certain movie and I'm not completely sure on it. Also a local video store on Sundays has 2 for 2 rental sales so that always helps.

Maxflier 12-25-04 04:16 PM

I buy pretty much anything i want to see, because if i am going to spend 5 bucks to rent it i would just as soon pay the 15-20 to own it.

Jackskeleton 12-25-04 04:24 PM

Mainly buy.

MasterofDVD 12-25-04 04:24 PM

I buy most every TV set I want because they are my new weakness. I started up with Netflix again recently so I've been renting far more the past 2 months then I have in ages.

I bought MANY movie sight unseen in the past but hopefully I can rent first now and make a better choices about what I buy.

nightmaster 12-25-04 04:39 PM

I mainly buy as well, but have a subscription to Netflix to rent stuff that I either haven't seen or am waiting for the price to buy to drop. My buying habit is usually to pick 'em up when the MSRP drops, at the pawn shops or during previously viewed sales at the big name rental chains. I will on occasion jump on a new release, regardless of the price, when I can't stand not to see it ;)

lopper 12-25-04 04:49 PM

I mostly just buy, but I got a card at Blockbuster a few months ago so I've been renting a few titles here and there.

Mopower 12-25-04 05:05 PM

I buy used DVD's from a local video store. Usually a month after the new releases come out they have them for $10 a piece. And I have Netflix.

antennaball 12-25-04 05:29 PM

Haven't rented a DVD in close to three years. Strictly buy.

Neuman 12-25-04 05:38 PM

Haven't rented in years either.

The Infidel 12-25-04 05:54 PM

Ditto. I can't remember the last time I rented. What's weird is I recently realized just how many movies in my collection are actually blind buys. You would think I would rent first, but I pretty much will buy a movie if I'm fairly certain I'll like it. It may be a long, long time before I watch it a second time, but I've never gotten rid of anything I've bought (unless it's to upgrade to a special edition or something).

gutwrencher 12-25-04 06:03 PM

I never rent. would defeat the purpose of building a library. below is a slice from the NY Times article from last Febuary...the one in which I was interveiwed:

I Don't Rent. I Own.

By WILSON ROTHMAN
Published: February 26, 2004

"EVERY night at his home in Des Moines, Todd Robertson watches a couple of DVD movies. Every few months he queues up a themed marathon he says might last 24 hours. His favorite genre is Italian horror, but he's got a whole world of cinema to choose from: at last count he owned 1,462 titles, although by now the number is probably higher."

I'd say the header says it all. at least I've moved over 1,800 since then. thought it would be higher by now.

Shagrath 12-25-04 06:10 PM

I buy exclusively. I can't tell you when the last time I rented a movie was.

TomOpus 12-25-04 09:05 PM

Yep, I only buy. It's been over 3 years since I've rented.

Fok 12-25-04 09:11 PM

Mainly buy, prices aren't too bad. Most of the time I see the film on the big screen first then decide whether to buy it.

spartanstew 12-25-04 10:02 PM

I'm a member of Blockbuster online rental club and I usually watch about 3-4 rentals per month. I also buy about 3-4 DVD's per month. It's rare that I'll buy a movie after I rent it. Usually I just rent the movies that I know I probably won't want to watch more than once.

natevines 12-25-04 10:04 PM

I'm a collector, so no, I never rent. Last time I did must've been before DVDs were around.

LorenzoL 12-25-04 10:21 PM

I mainly buy most of my DVDs however I still occasionally rent them also. I don't have the budget to blind buy movies that I may end up not liking.

Cameron 12-25-04 10:24 PM

cupon 12-25-04 10:36 PM

I've never rented a DVD and I never will.
