Fuehrer Ex

The highly provocative, denied, criticized, and simply dismissed by many German "Amercian History X" is now available on DVD.

The film was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.

synopsis courtesy of Bavaria Film International:

"Both in their late teens, Heiko and Tommy are inseparable friends with an impossible dream: to emigrate to Australia. It's impossible because they live in Communist East Berlin and it's three years before the fall of the Wall. Yet the rebellious Tommy persists and, after spending some time in jail for burning a flag, he vows to flee East Germany. Though skeptical of Tommy's plan, Heiko joins him - and they are both caught. Tommy already knows the ropes of prison life. But for the more sensitive Heiko, it's a descent into hell, where desperate men are obsessed with gaining power over the minds - and bodies - of others. Believing he can elude these power struggles, Heiko refuses to ally himself with the Neo-Nazis who have recruited Tommy. But he has no chance. After injuring an inmate, Heiko is put in solitary confinement. Pressured to spy on the Neo-Nazis in exchange for Heiko's release, Tommy agrees, and Heiko returns to the others. But by now, he has lost his will and his soul. Soon the Wall comes down and East Germany ceases to exist. Yet the Neo-Nazis continue to grow, finding many supporters among the regime's former prison inmates - including Heiko, who now becomes one of the right-wingers' most virulent spokesmen. Tommy is welcomed into the fold, but he leaves Heiko and his new friends in disgust after they brutally attack and kill several innocent youths. When the Neo-Nazis learn that Tommy spied on them in prison, they resolve that Tommy must be eliminated - and that Heiko is the one to do it…

'Fuehrer Ex' is based upon the autobiographical experiences of co-screenwriter and ex-Neo-Nazi Ingo Hasselbach who is also the author of the book under the same name ('Führer-Ex: Memoirs of a former Neo-Nazi') that sold over 100.000 copies for Random House in the USA. With this feature film debut, Winfried Bonengel (director of the controversial documentary 'Profession: Neo-Nazi') touches political and historical questions in an authentic and powerful way. But most of all, he creates a lesson in courage and a testimony to the values of friendship and loyalty."

Cheers,
Pro-B
