Hondo supposedly is coming in May 2005, along with McLintock, Island In The Sky, and The High And The Mighty....all released by Paramount.

Nice to see a strong turnout in this discussion...sometimes I get the feeling I'm the last man on earth who likes Westerns.......

John Wayne's The Alamo (LONG VERSION!) and way too many more for me to list so I'll just give a second nomination to those already listed.

I most definitely agree with the earlier mention of "El Condor" by Joe29; it contains perhaps the sexiest scene ever in a Western (when Mariana Hill puts on a show while undressing).

I know they're working on it but let's get moving on the Errol Flynn Westerns.

How about Yellow Sky (1949) with Gregory Peck and Richard Widmark?

and many more..........and some more Audie Murphy too!

The Train Robbers- one of John Wayne's last movies, with Ann-Margret and Ben Johnson. I'm also waiting for the SE of McClintock! that is supposedly coming down the road soon so I can burn the ugly, public domain looking copy in the stores now.

Most wanted by far is the legendary Val Lewton's final production Apache Drums.

Apart from that, we really do need Fort Apache on DVD too.

It's out already, in flipper mode, but an SE of The Wild Bunch has to be on the horizon sometime soon. Criterion could do wonders with it.

Cheyenne Autumn(1964) - John Ford's last great western.
The Hanging Tree(1959) - Gary Cooper's last performance in a western.
The Last Wagon(1956) - Good flick starring Richard Widmark as a man running from justice saving some young surviors in a indian attack.
Bad Day At Black Rock(1955) - Not a real western but it does set up in a modern western town, good performances by Spencer Tracy and Robert Ryan.

Expect a 2-disc SE from Warners sometime next year (as well as what promises to be a super edition of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid); part of a Sam Peckinpah box set.

A two disc set featuring the 1914 and 1931 versions of Squaw Man by Cecil B. DeMille.

Not a western per se, but Northwest Passage is another i'm dying for.

Agreed. I picked up this and The Shooting from DDD for around $15 each. Didn't know they were out of print.

Available in R2 as part of this John Wayne box set, from Universal. Apparently it's one of the few highlights of a rather poor effort from Universal.

Count me as another person who is very glad to see the response to this thread. I grew up in the 70's and 80's when westerns were not in vogue. I never really gave westerns a second thought until I saw Young Guns. While that may not be the best western ever, it was very good and opened my eyes to the possibility that westerns could be among the best movies ever made and not just another TV genre.

Since then I've become a western junkie - and I really want to get almost all of the titles listed on this thread, but at the top of my "want list" list is WARLOCK.

Beat me to it.

And, as mentioned previously as well, Cheyenne Social Club.

Damn! I didn't have to wait long after posting this thread! It will be out on 5/24/05!

That is one seriously good Western.
