How to tell if ToyBox is legit?

Hey,

I remember a while ago there was a thread about tell-tale signs that some Toy Story Toy Boxes weren't legit.

Could someone please direct me towards the thread, or tell me what I can look for to make sure my Toy Box isn't a bootleg?

My friends bought it for me for my birthday from EBay, and I just wanted to make sure that everything was in order.

Thanks!

Yeah, I remember the thread but can't seem to find it. I think someone posted pics to compare. I can't remember the specifics, though, so here are some general things to look for...

Make sure it doesn't say DTS or DVD9 anywhere on the covers.

The disc art is a slightly zoomed in pic of the cover art for that disc.

Each disc has the silver reflective background, not white.

Hopefully, someone else might have some tips.

What TomOpus said. Also, there's a transparent slip case on the outside of the box with the character printed on it.

Thuis must be popular among bootleggers. I spotted a Star Wars Ep I boot tonight at Blockbuster (trade in) - it had DVD-9 sticker and said DTS on the cover art, and DTS-ES on the disc. (It also had a misspelling on the back - "Phantim" in the features desriptions.)

Wonderful, thanks for the help guys! It came with the transparent slipcase, the discs are all reflective, and the inserts are all in order. Looks perfectly legit to me!

Again, thank you all for the help

Any way to tell before you buy it? There are a few on ebay and I really want to see if I can get one. One set I regret never buying.

might try a more legit site than ebay....or use paypal, so you can get your money back if you get screwed...might also try buying one in your area so after you win the bid you can go look at it

Feedback is the best way to tell... Check someone's feedback. If they're selling bootlegs, it should be pretty clear from that.

you don't usually get your money back from Paypal, they have a very soft fraud policy and it is usally gone once it is debited from Paypal account. most auctions are less than secure with Paypal payments. trust me!

also feedback is a poor way to tell if a user is selling bootlegs... most people won't even catch it... the feedback was clean for many pages back on the last batch I bought from ebay, which turned out to be some/all bootlegs.

What is a more legit site that has this set? If I could buy locally I would, but nobody has it around here.

Feedback is essentially the only way to tell, but for different reasons than yours. If I see 40 consecutive postives for a seller who is exclusively selling sealed Disney Limited Issues or Hard Boiled Criterions, then I know everything he sells is likely a bootleg.

The one time I got burned on eBay, the auction said "sealed". Yep, it was sealed alright... by a piece of tape.

Ebay sure is not easy to shop. What really is annoying is when you ask for a picture they tell you there digital camera is broken. Possible, but I just asked 2 people for pics and this was their response.

This is one of the ones I am looking at.

But looking at it now the price sure seems high.

That excuse wouldn't wash with me. Even though it's no guarantee, I won't buy unless there's a picture. Period. It's not like their auction got on eBay all by itself. They had to plan it ahead of time. There are very easy ways of getting a pic of your item. If you can't borrow a friend's camera, there are digital disposal cameras or you can even scan a regular photo.

The Ultimate Toy Box has a 3rd disc with extra features. Plus the box art is cooler, and it's worth more.
