man o man do the sets look so good together.
i never knew green, red, and blue could form such a dizzying array of wonderful color that seems to tingle all the senses when placed next to each other!

Thanks! I agree to have them standalones, but for 3 bucks I rather get it now and and just have it. Would hate to kick myself later for not.

I'm trying to find out if the regular 4-disc box set has its own factory shrink wrap around it, within the larger big gift set? I can't remember how they came over the last two years?
My Amazon order says it won't ship until Dec. 20, with a delivery between 23 and 27. That really sucks - I don't understand why it would ship so far after street date?

There is an ad for 1/2 off a replica of Sting, as well.

Watched this tonight, and it kicks all kinds of ass, as expected. While it doesn't make any big changes to the characters like adding that extra Faramir material did to TTT (Denethor is still just portrayed as a dick, albeit with more scenes), it does fill in a lot of gaps and makes for a more satisfying overall experience because of that. Here's a quick list of the additions that were the most significant one way or the other:
PRO:
- Saruman and Grima's end. This scene was good not only because it tied up that plot thread, but because it signalled the beginning of Gandalf's doubt which is revisited several times during this film. It also made more continuity sense regarding the Palantir in the water.
- More Paths of the Dead leading up to the capture of the Corsairs. A lot of people complain about this, saying that it kills the surprise when Aragorn and the dead army show up later. I kind of agreed with those naysayers until I actually saw the scene. Now we remain with the characters. We know what Aragorn knows when he knows it. The surprise is still there, but it's now in a different, more sympathetic place in the movie. Plus, by toning down the surprise later, the appearance of the Corsairs at Pelennor no longer feels like Deus Ex Machina, but something truly earned. This is one of those additions that I was ho-hum about before, but ended up loving.
- Witch-King vs. Gandalf. This was not a very long scene, and should have been in the theatrical cut. Filled in a continuity gap and built more tension at the right moment. I think everyone was expecting this to be awesome, and they're right.
- More fighting in every major battle. Some of it was just more violence (a little extra coverage of the decapitated heads landing, and more of the Oliphaunts), but some of it also filled in holes (the end of pus-face orc, for instance, as well as a scene which shows why the defenders of Osgiliath were not terribly prepared for the river onslaught). There was also more post-battle wrapup, which was quite important.
- Houses of Healing. Faramir and Eowyn. Enough said.
- Aragorn's challenge. It was shorter than I thought it would be, but it shows that they didn't draw out the orcs by merely waltzing up to the Black Gate.
- Mouth of Sauron. The debated change to the ending of this scene aside, I loved its reinclusion. It changes the tone of that final battle, and was sorely missing in the theatrical cut.
- Forced march. The way they escape this is a little far-fetched, though I suppose it's one of the many "only the minds of the halflings made it possible" moments sprinkled throughout the story, so I can't be too hard on that. Still, I like it more for its inclusion (which filled a continuity gap) than its execution (which was okay, but could've been better).
CON:
- No wedding of Faramir and Eowyn. Come on, guys. You filmed it! I suppose it would sort of slow down the ending even more, and it would've been awkward to put it where it chronologically belonged, but even so, I've got to list this as a con. On the same note, though, it's no longer a surprise to see the two together at the end, because now that we have the Houses of Healing scenes, we KNOW they're going to get together. So the omission of the wedding isn't as bad in the extended cut as it was in the theatrical.
- No mention of Eomer becoming King of Rohan. While I couldn't care less about showing Legolas and Gimli having adventures in the forest, not showing who became Rohan's King now that Theoden is dead is unfortunate. But, like Faramir and Eowyn's wedding, I really couldn't say where it would go without it feeling out of place.
- No Easterlings. Okay, now this may not be as big of an issue to some people, but I think they could've been worked into the movie MUCH easier than either of the above. Battles were extended in the extended edition, so where are those awesome armored dudes we saw at the Black Gate in TTT? They aren't in Mordor. They aren't at Pelennor Fields. They aren't at the battle at the end. If my eyes are bad, someone PLEASE tell me where even one of them appears. I was really hoping they were filmed and just cut from the movie, but now I get the feeling they weren't filmed at all. And if that's the case, why have such an elaborate introduction to them in TTT? So much care was put into the making of these movies that that makes no sense to me.
In the end, these are rather minor nitpicks to what is now a complete 11-hour masterpiece. Bravo, Peter Jackson and all the rest.
