Star Trek: Enterprise packaging
If you've been to The Digital Bits in the last couple of days (Monday to be exact), you'll see possible R2 packaging for Star Trek: Enterprise. The Bits also say that this packaging is likely for R1 as well.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...prisedvd01.jpg http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...prisedvd02.jpg I must say, I don't like it, just as I don't like the TOS packaging either. Why O Why does Paramount think that we like this odd-ball packaging. Yeah, it looks cool all by itself, but try putting them in DVD shelves. |
The packaging is definitely out of this world.
|
Not nearly as tacky as the TOS boxes.
|
If this continues the trend of getting packages half as cool as r2, r3 or r4, i'm ALL for it.
Hell, that box is already more interesting than the show.. |

Stylish packaging is all very well, but it should be secondary to being 1) easy to access, 2) convenient to store on the shelf, and 3) reasonably slim. Voyager has a pain-in-the-neck slipcover, but once you take that off (or wrestle it back on again) it's great on the other counts. TOS, on the other hand, is just awful awful awful. I mean, the retro look is cute for about 30 seconds, but after that it's just annoying. At least it looks like Enterprise has full-sized pages for the DVDs, inside the shell, rather than the cheesy CD-sized case for TOS. And it looks a little more sensible to access than TOS. So, kind of like Voyager in terms of accessibility. I guess I can live with that, now that I think about it. It's better than going further down the oddball packaging road of TOS. |
So does this mean that TNG and DS9 will be re-released in plastic shells sometime in the not-too-distant future?
|
I really like the packaging for Enterprise. I can definitely live with that . . . it's very classy in my opinion.

I like this packaging, just as I like the new TOS season set packaging. And I am not at all crazy about the DS9 packaging. yes, it is slim, but that is all it has going for it. In every other regard, it looks and feels cheap and amateurish. |

I think it looks quite nice. Cant think of a reason id buy it though (at least not until I finish off the other trek shows, which given their outrageous pricing policy could take a long time ;) )
|
Won't look good on a shelf with other DVDs that's for sure.
|
Tentative release dates if you were wondering:
- Season 1: May 3, 2005 - Season 2: July 12, 2005 - Season 3: September 6, 2005 - Season 4: November 1, 2005 Season 4 has been great so far (sans one episode) |
if the packaging doesn't suit you, take the digipack or whatever, OUT of the plastic shell, and put that on your shelf. Now, everybody's happy :)
|
I know everyone praises DS9's boxes, but I'm not too thrilled with them. They seem that over the years with wear and tear that the plastic flaps will just fall off. Voyager sucks too. Why don't they just do something simple but effective, like Firefly's set?
|
I imagine Paramount does this packaging to justify the ridiculous price point. That being said, I can't wait to be gouged!
|
illennium, I'm very sorry if the packaging is too complicated for you. I fail to see what is unsimple and unsubtle about this set. While I don't like outrageous packaging (not crazy at all about any of the Star Trek season sets to date, I like this one a lot. If you don't, that's you.

When putting them on the shelf, how do you tell what is what? By season I mean. In the end (of 2005) one could have all four of these and have non-descript spines, so-to-speak. I know R2 & R4 has had unique packaging for all of its Trek releases, but I don't care for them just for the reason I stated above. |
Mike, I'm not so sure you can tell from that picture of the packaging that there is no spine title.

I really hate the opening theme for this show ...

See the slits on the spine of the outer case. I'm betting those are to allow viewing of the inner case which will have the season number in small print. The TOS cases use this system.
|
Does it come with the giant action figure of Archer that's in the picture?

Okay, okay...sorry. Just got a little carried away.
I agree with Holly: the DS9 packaging (and to a large extent, I would include Voyager in that assessment) is really good. A solid improvement over the fold out TNG inner section. (I truly hope we've seen the last of those.) |
Is it me or does the packaging look like a speed stick?

It definitely looks like it should have a roller-dial down at the bottom... that pushes the DVDs thru the top when you turn it... :) |

More views of the packaging here... it looks like the inside is Voyager-like in it's case... eh. Why not just use nice, easy slim-line cases?! |
How much does all this custom packaging inflate the MSRP?
These ENTERPRISE sets look more like drinking flasks than DVDs, but I guess that's better than the Original Series' red, yellow and gold suppositories. |

PLEASE no more awkward, bulky packaging! Didn't the Battlestar Galactica Cylon head teach anyone anything?
|
As someone who paid big bucks to buy all seven seasons of Next Gen from R2, just to get the cool plastic cases, I say . For those of you wanting boring square boxes that "fit in with your other DVDs", there are a number of ways to accomplish your goal (pick up a bunch of cheap amarays from Blockbuster, etc.). There are those of us who enjoy specialty packaging. I display these unusual cases at the top of my DVD case, and they always draw attention.

Just read an article, this show is ending in May. :(
|
As long as I don't have to deal with all the scratches/scuffs/pixelating/freezing like I've went through with the TOS sets, I'll take any packaging that they throw at me.
|
I don't have a problem with unique or interesting packaging. I have a problem with breakable quality (DS9) and very impractical (VOY) packaging. I love the look of it, but will it be solid or more crap?

I think the opening song is one of the factors why I stopped watching the show after only a couple episodes. It just didn't feel like Star Trek with that kind of opening to me. I look forward to being able to fast forward through that junk...
|
I personally LOVE the Enterprise theme.
