DVD Shortage in 2005?

WHILE UK HIGH Street giant Dixons said it was discontinuing sales of VCRs because DVD players were outsaling them by a ratio of 40:1, a report claimed a shortage of disks is likely in the first half of 2005.The Taiwan Economic News said that global demand for DVDs is likely to grow to as much as four billion in 2005, while capacity remains only three billion. Around 2.4 billion disks are likely to be bought in 2004, and so there"s been an excess and prices have fallen. But that"s meant few manufacturers have invested in the projected push forwards next year.

If this is a predicted thing that could be happening, I think it will reflect in recent and upcoming dvd sales, and companies will be able to accomodate for demand with major film releases, box sets like the recent Seinfeld one may be another story though.

I'm sure the same thing happened with CDs when they replaced tapes. I don't think there will be a problem.

What percentage of the price of a commercial DVD do you think the media cost is?

Find something else to worry about.

It must be an astronomical amount! With $1 DVD's showing up in Best Buy/Target now in addition to dollar stores.

I just have one question:

Is "outsaling" a real word?

I don't think that we'll ever run out of stuff to buy on DVD.

If you are on the water, you might be "outsailing" someone, but if you are dealing in merchandise, then you would be "outselling" them...

In the late 80's, when blank video tapes were sill in the $5.00 range, several newspaper articles appeared saying that since the VCR was now in so many homes, there would be a severe shortage of videocassettes, espically blank ones, and that prices on them would start going back up (they were around $15 for a blank when the VCR was still new item).

Never happened.

The supply was always there, and the price cotinued to plummet.

So .... I'm not concerned.

Somehow I don't see that there will be a shortage of titles that come out for $20 on tuesdays, simply because they can't make enough media to release them on......if so they could always conserve plastic and change over some pressing plants by not releasing music CDs by about half that don't sell for crap anyways .....
