I was also at a loss why the film skipped a frame pretty much everytime the new footage begun and ended, its brand new! they say they used CGI morphing to stop it being too distracting! the picture should never jump like in Riddick and I think they may have done it on purpose as theres no film I have ever seen it happen like that in before, what did thay do try to destroy the film! why?
it just makes no sense I counted at least 15 jumps in the film and there maybe was more, either way it does kind of take you out the film for a second as I thought my dvd player was acting up again.

In Escape from Butcher Bay it is shown that he gets his eyes from the girl in the visions, they never say or imply that he gets them from the witch doctor guy, all he is getting is his arm stitched up when the vision appears and the next scene has him recovering from getting the shine but its never made clear the doctor gave it to him, because he sounds as suprised as him. I'm glad they reinserted him using his energy blast that was seen in the trailer, funny enough its in the game which is a prequel, kind of a continuity error it seems. They could have removed the stupid, empath/cell phone conversation between Newton and her man, just seemed to repeat obvious info. I do see that they removed the shot at the end of the movie of the energy ball coming back down from the sky, more to obviously show the planet was spared in the end and they removed what sounded like an ominous voice over from Dench's character that seemed to imply her race had some other plans running. I do agree with everyone that this should have either had some branching involved or both versions of the film in the same package.

Hey frm the sound of it theres soo much taken out its more than I thought! I thought I was imagining it at 1st, but after reading other people small observations I am quite angry
and now I will sell my R1 dvd and get the Japanese dvd with both versions of the film as I want it sll and I miss them bits I saw in the cinema, if it was a crap film I wouldnt care, but I really like the film so its gonna get bought again.
Fingers crossed in the future a special edition comes along! and puts some effort into the actual dvd! such a Big film deserves far better dvd effort than the dvds they have brought out, they should be embarresed!

Im on the fence also, if it was just added scenes to the fights, which it does have and increases the grittiness, I would have been happy but the scenes cut in some instances were much better than what was inserted, increasing the Newton/Urban scenes was a dumb move as their intentions were clearly stated in the original cut and didnt need expanding, especially since everyone seems to be in agreement that the acting from these two wasnt up to par with the others.
Just checked some DVD sites for Japan, for what it costs, and thats not including shipping, it'd be like $20 cheaper just to buy the regular version on top of buying the DC , and the Japanese has both movies on 2 seperate discs anyway, so it'd be like the same thing.

I was just about to order the Japanese 2 disc set but came to the same conclusion you did. I'll just go and pick up the R1 Theatrical cut and save$20.

True on the DTS, not an issue with me for now, hopefully one day it will be. As for some complaints on the extras, at first I was in disagreement because there are 2 commentaries, one being a trivia track but its there nonetheless and to me a commentary is usually the main incentive if its a movie i love but the rest of the extras are trivial but I did get the Best Buy bonus disc and that seems to have everything that the main disc should have had, at least 3 very good Making Ofs and an interactive Production Diary.

The final shot is the energy ball that was released to purge the planet coming back down to the base, sparing the planet and an ominous voice over by Dench that seems to imply there is something else going to happen. I didnt stay all the way through the DVD credits until recently and saw that they reveal a bronze statue of Riddick on his throne right before the final credits roll, nice touch.

it sounds better than the actual dvd, the commentary on the dvd is ok, but the rest are appauling and pointless
I want a beefy making of documentary
even Pitch Black had better extras then Riddick does.
