Apocalypse Now or Redux?

I didn't come across a thread like this when searching. I was just wondering what everyone here prefers.
I want to pick up one of these on dvd and i'm not sure what to go for. I've seen redux on AMC so it might not be the same if I get the original cut, however that seems to be the favorite from what i've heard.

Most people prefer the original theatrical cut (as do I). Many will tell you that Redux "totally sux, dude". Honestly, they're both good films, but they are totally different films. The added footage in Redux makes it a very different movie.

I recommend you pick them both up.

Personally I'd get both -- as I certainly did.

Any chance of a new version coming out that has both? I've heard some places say that the first dvd release may be the last time that the original cut is available.

I watched this movie and couldn't get into it. Not trying to be funny, but could someone explain why this was considered a great movie?

Both, if you're a fan. But the transfer is better on Redux, if that matters to ya...

Personally, I prefer the original cut (since it's what I grew up watching) but it's good to have Redux as well, some of the deleted scenes should have remained in the original cut > (some, NOT ALL, the extra bunnies bit and the French plantation scene could have stayed on the cutting room floor for all I care).

I'm hoping... Someday... That there will be an ultra-special edition of this film with both cuts and (good) extra features. (HD perhaps?) I already own both cuts though.

Anyways, I personally prefer the original cut, though the Redux version is interesting. I could have done without more of the Bunnies and the French Plantation.

I only bought Redux for now.
I've watched the regular version so many times that if I want to watch Apocalypse Now I'll choose Redux even though the original is better, just to see something (relatively) new.

I actually like and prefer Redux better. Even though all scenes weren't exactly necessary, I feel that the pros outweigh the cons. As me12321 and Johnny Zhivago said, the French Plantation scene could have been left out, but all the extra extended scenes and whatnot make for a more cohesive movie, IMO.

This is a tough question. I own both versions (probably best recommendation). Both are different movies and both are outstanding.

I'd say both... they do feel like two different flicks... awesome stuff.

I have both and usually end up watching Redux...just get into the mood of seeing a BIG movie so I might as well see the longer version...plus the additions are generally excellent scenes.

I only have Redux. I won't buy the original until a new release.

Get both. Redux is much longer but several of the reinserted scenes are excellent and the picture qualiyt is better. The new Brando scene is a keeper and should have never been cut.

Among other things it's depth, complexity and richness. There isn't a scene in the film that isn't almost a story unto itself. There are thousands of details, all find their way onto the screen, but only reveal themselves with multiple viewings. The pace may seem slow, but the psychological action is so intense it's exhausting. The nature of man is still primal no matter how civilized we may seem to become. that's but one of the film's numerous themes explored as it charts each character's decent into hell. The ending is one of the best ever.

Eventually they'll come out with a third version and where will you be then? After all, they still haven't released 'Hearts of Darkness' (which contained most of the edited material), so eventually there will probably be a 'set' that contains all 3 movies.

I say get both if you can. Everyone says the French Plantation scene should be left out of Redux, while I agree that it's long and slows down the pace of the movie immensly, it's an interesting scene that shows the French mentality that these people were sick of always losing.

Any version that only contains the first half. I don't see why so many people like this movie. It seemed like the first half was good, but then it just went south after that.
