Question on DVD soundtracks

Excuse me for being new, and if this should be in a different category, but this seemed the best one to ask this in.

A co-worker of mine came to me the other day and asked a question about the movie Underworld. When it first came out on dvd he rented it and loved the music sound track on it. and went out and bought the cd.

About a month ago his wife bought him the special edition dvd that came out, and when he watched it the music soundtrack was not on there. What I mean is the vocals, and ambient music and special effects were there, but the Hard hitting rock and roll music wasn't.

In the opening scene once she is done giving the voice over, and she jumps off the building, in the theatrical release, and in the dvd he rented there was some heavy hitting pounding music in the background. However in this "special edition" dvd his wife bought him, that music just wasn't there.

I checked my dvd, the original, not special edition version, which I bought day one of it coming out on dvd, and the music was not there either.

Does anyone know why a rental would have this music, yet the version I have, and the special edition version wouldn't? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? I thought I knew a fair ammount about the inner workings of movie companies and their policies, coming from a family of theatre owners for the past 60 years. But this question that was posed to me has me baffled.

Anyone out there able to shed some light on this?

I believe Underworld was released on DVD twice, the theatrical cut and a director's cut. That might explain the difference.
Try searching the forum for an explanation of the two.

well see thats just it. I have the theatrical that came out day one of dvd release. it doesn't have the musical soundtrack during the movie. my co-worker has the directors cut (second underworld release) and it doesn't have the musical soundtrack either.

Yet the one he rented, had the musical soundtrack that matches that of the version seen in the theatre.

Could it be that your friend is misremembering the music in that spot?

Sure you're not thinking of the music as it played in the trailer, which had Red Tape by Agent Provocateur play at that point I believe.

everyone seems to think I'm losing my mind, or I don't know what I'm talking about.

This music was in the theatrical release, along with the trailer. And it was also in one copy of the dvd. Just not the dvd I have. or my co-worker.

Can you or your friend go back and rent a copy again, to see if the music is there? Personally, I think you are misremembering the music from the trailer and your brain seemed to put the music into the theatrical release.

Whoa! Easy there Cool New Member.

Chances are, that ALL the dvd's are the same. There would be no reason for a pressing of a disc to exicise one song in the middle of an audio track.

Also, there are always instances when multiple people remember something that wasn't there. More than likely it was in the trailer like mentioned and your mind is telling you otherwise.

But I think you don't like that answer, sounds like you made up your mind before you posted your question. So instead of getting pissed at everyone for trying to help you out, prove us wrong.

Most cd soundtracks are "music inspired by" or the such. The soundtrack is made as another money maker, while the songs typically are not in the actual movie. The music you seem to remember, like many said, was probably in the theatrical trailer if that.

The music in the movie is probably in this "Original Score Soundtrack" composed by Paul Haslinger.
Here is a link to that... www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CF2ZL/ref=pd_bxgy_text_1/102-6688952-2616116?v=glance&s=music&st=*

The Editorial/Review on amazon states, "Every track on this album is either written exclusively for this project, or is an exclusive remix, or rare version only available on this release. " From this, I would have to say most of the music has nothing to do with the movie.

I understand everyones thoughts that I seem to be pissed and made up my mind about what I remember. and that you think I remember things wrong.

The point is, that the music that multiple of my friends and I remember was in the movie, and by watching the movie that is what caused my co-worker to want the soundtrack. not by watching the trailer.

I understand that there is no reason for a dvd company to press multiple versions of the movie. thats why I am confused as to why the one copy my friend rented would have it and the others wouldn't.

I'm also confused as to why the theatrical version had this music in it. And NOT just the preview as everyone here states. and why they didn't put it in the home dvd versions, except this mysterious one that my co-worker rented.

Now I can't vouch for that one, as I did not see it. but I know my co-worker did not watch the movie in the theatres. But I, and most of my other co-workers who remember the same music saw it in the theatres, and said that they remember it from the movie, and the preview.

Now maybe we are all brainwashed into thinking the movie had it in when it was only the preview as everyone here thinks. But when there are about a dozen of us that think otherwise, I find it hard to believe we are all just thinking wrong.

Either way, I thank everyone for giving there opinions, even if they weren't what I was looking for. Its still a mystery to me. and probably will be.

Hmmm... Sounds like a job for Michael Moore. Underworld: The Missing Music - How the Red States Are Un-informed
