New Disney cartoon series (and the end of Disney Treasures)?

Taken from dvdanswers.com:

Disney has today announced four Disney Classic Cartoon Favorites DVDs that each present a line-up of wonderfully fun and entertaining animated short subjects starring Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Chip ‘N Dale, respectively. All of the short films included in this collection were made during the Disney Studio’s first ‘golden age’ of animation, when Walt and his team of artists first brought character animation to new heights. These full-color animated classics, are presented as crisp and clear as when audiences first saw them in theaters, and in full frame and Dolby Digital sound. Each will be available to own from the 11th January next year, priced at around $14.99 a piece. We'll bring you the artwork for these shortly.

Volume One: Starring Mickey
Mickey’s Circus
Mickey’s Garden
The Little Whirlwind
On Ice
Hawaiian Holiday
Moving Day
Orphan’s Picnic

Volume Two: Starring Donald Duck
Inferior Decorator
Don Donald
Golden Eggs
Bee At The Beach
Donald’s Dog Laundry
Donald’s Vacation
Old MacDonald Duck
8 Chef Donald

Volume Three: Starring Goofy
The Art of Skiing
How To Fish
How To Swim
Baggage Buster
How To Dance
Lion Down
The Big Wash
Hold That Pose
Father’s Day Off

Volume Four: Starring Chip N' Dale
Chicken In The Rough
Chip ‘n’ Dale
Out of Scale
Two Chips And A Miss
Food For Feudin’
Working For Peanuts
Out On A Limb
Three For Breakfast
Dragon Around

I hope this doesn't mean the end of the Disney Treasures line, since these sound somewhat similar in nature (albeit with less content at a lower cost).

What is this? Aren't most of the Mickey Donald and Goofy eps already released in their respective Treasures collections?

I too was looking forward to a Chip and Dale collection.

Aren't Treasures a really hot selling item for Disney? Why would they stop the series?

These looks to me like cheap DVDs for parents to pick up to shut kids up.

Because the Treasures are expensive and time-consuming to make. Crap like this is much easier to produce and results in a fatter profit margin.

This doesn't indicate that they are stopping with the Treasures series (3 more of them come out next month). I think this series is geared toward kids, where the Treasures are more for adults/collectors.

Let's all say it together:

"Just because Disney is releasing these volumes, it DOES NOT mean that they won't be releasing the Treasures sets any more"

Think of these releases as the same way that Paramount handles Spongebob... box sets for adults, single discs for kids.

True, but those were already in the pipe before Roy Disney left the company. There's been much speculation that they're the last we'll see.

I suppose I just don't see the connection between the Treasures sets and these. These new sets are coming out about a month after the latest Treasures batch. What would possibly lead anyone to think that this now 'replaces' Treasures.

There has always been a huge gap in between Treasures waves. Putting out a different compilation a few weeks later doesn't indicate anything, one way or the other.

Clown Of The Jungle starring Donald Duck on DVD??

I look forward to seeing the DVD appearance of Clown Of The Jungle starring Donald Duck!! It's a favourite short of mine, and, whilst on the subject of Disney classics, aren't there some more Silly Symphonies to come out yet?

I'm not neccessarily saying these are specifically designed to replace the Treasures line (though it does seem to be cannibalizing some of that market). I'm just pointing out that it's well-known that Eisner took a dim view of the Treasures because A) they were costly to produce, B) they had limited marketability compared to the kiddie fare, and C) they were Roy's baby.

The pessimist in me believed that the Treasures line was doomed before these shorts discs were ever announced. Their arrival does not help assuage that fear.
