Why do people spell their names Threepio and Artoo?
I never understood this. Is this supposed to give them humanity or something?

Perhaps you should ask George Lucas or Alan Dean Foster, since they are the people who first used "Threepio" / "See Threepio" and "Artoo" / "Artoo-Detoo" as the printed versions of the droids' names in the original Star Wars Novel.
