Giving away the pilot episode on DVD: A new trend?

I just received my copy of Entertainment Weekly and inside is the pilot episode DVD of the new Fox show "House" starring Hugh Laurie. Last week, I received the pilot of "Huff" with Hank Azaria. I like this. I hope it continues.

I subscribe to EW, and I didn't get either of those.

Then again, maybe it is a monosyllabic "H" thing. "House" with Hugh and "Huff" with Hank.

I heard TV Guide is also going to have DVDs of the pilot for "House."

No disc for me, either. I guess they don't need viewers in my market.

I'm not sure if it's the pilot, but I saw a copy of TV Guide tonite that was bagged and had a DVD with the GOD from House on the sleeve. I found it hard to pay attention since the yummy Desperate Housewives were on the cover.

Didn't buy it though. I'll wait to get it cheaper...

I got all 3 EW has done lately (with "Jack and Bobby"). I think it is an excellent trend. I will now try and watch "Huff" because of it and I will definitely not watch "House" because of it.

I got them all, but it's a double edged sword.

One one hand you may get a potential long term viewers if they like it and continue to watch. On the other hand, You have one less viewer on the shows premiere that can possibly make the network feel that viewers aren't tuning in or interested in the show.

So do you go for trying to build long term viewers or please sponsers with nice first night numbers.
