I made that statement based on numerous threads I've read, where someone mentioned (a little off-topic- like my mention) a music score, and the many replies that were from people upset that this unique extra was phasing out, probably due to both soundtrack labels losing money, and also many bootlegs offering "Complete" scores that have been ripped from DVDs.

No. For Titanic, Paramount is all of North America, Fox is about everywhere else.

Even other Paramount films-

I bought an international copy of the "Braveheart" soundtrack, which listed Fox as the distributor, but of course Paramount released it here in US/Canada. The strange thing was, I bought it to replace my 'locally' made one, which had playing problems on certain CD players...and I like the International version's cover, and I noticed the audio channels on the International CD are flipped!

Someone over at the HTF found these early specs at the BBFC site:

Timelapse Sequence 4m
1912 Newsreel 2m
Deep Dive Presentation by James Cameron 15m
Ship’s Tour Montage 7m
Featurettes x 7 (EPK) 18m
Titanic in 30 seconds with Bunnies (????)
HBO First Look – Heart of the Ocean 27m

I've already sold the old version of Titanic. Glad they are finally releasing a better version of it.

shanester 07-18-05 04:56 PM

Are we going to get a cast commentary??

I'll always remember Kate Winslet in an interview say: "I was genuinely frightened of Mr Cameron"

I hope we get an audio commentary by James Cameron.

But 3 discs when other reigons get 4?! I'm pissed.

JLB 07-19-05 12:08 PM

Do we know for a fact that we are getting 3 and not 4? And if so, do we know for sure that for the US they aren't, for whatever reason, just putting all the supplments on one disc?

I'll just be glad to have a great version of the movie spread across two discs. I'd rebuy just for that alone.

Image and sound quality improvements aside, it'll take us back to the old VHS days.

It is good for an intermission, though.

From DavisDVD:

"We've got a pretty major news update for you regarding the upcoming Titanic: Collector's Edition. From what we have gathered from a few sources, it looks like Paramount will release the long-awaited film in only one edition. The initial press release issued back in March (which you can find elsewhere on this site) indicated that James Cameron's uber-blockbuster would be released in both two-disc and four-disc editions. Now, however, it appears that 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Lightstorm Entertainment have decided to release only one version - and that will be a three-disc edition.

I don't know the details for this decision, but I imagine that it involved a lot of consumer marketing surveys and bottom-line budgetary analysis (which is odd, since a two-disc edition would have sold more copies to the casual fan of the film). Either way, look for a three-disc Titanic: Collector's Edition on October 25th."

All I can say is, we'd better not lose anything from the other-region versions.

dx23 07-23-05 11:22 AM

Most likely one of the discs will be a flipper. I'm too hoping that we don't lose anything the other regions have. I think this decision to only release one version is going to benefit all, DVD collectors and casual fans. Since Paramount will like to sell this to casual fans, then they are going to keep the price pretty low for a 3 disc set and us DVD collectors, we dont' have to pay a premium for the additional bonuses and supplemental materials.

Artman 07-23-05 12:16 PM

I'd rather pay another $10 for a collector's set. And the discs are all one-sided, the art for them has already been shown.

:(

Living Dead 07-23-05 12:32 PM

I'd rather have the 4-disc version too. I was anticipating a Gone With the Wind caliber set. Would it be safe to assume that the movie will be on two discs, and we'll have only one disc of extras? For a movie this size, that's disappointing.

That's what the picture seems to show:

http://www.davisdvd.com/gallery/covers_big.html

I hope Monday or early next week brings some official specs and/or explanations. I wouldn't mind if they had just reduced it to three discs worldwide, but if only Region 1 gets three discs...it just doesn't make sense, and it makes me upset at Paramount. I've been waiting/hoping for this SE since the original disc came out, and now to have a potentially lesser version would be a huge disappointment.

shanester 07-23-05 03:12 PM

The success of the LOTR extended editions should of put to rest any worry about consumers not wanting to spend a little bit xtra to get the 4 discs with all the bells and whistles

As long as we get a Cameron commentary and some new interviews with cast and crew I'll be content. Anything else will be added bonus for me

I've already seen countless documenteries on the actual sinking of the ship anyway. The best one I saw was on A&E

Thank you, Paramount. You're really endearing yourself to me....

Cameron 07-24-05 12:07 AM

WTF...so you announce a 2 disc and a 4 disc...then all we get is a 3 disc...to much for everyone who didn't want the basic release, to much for those who wanted some major stuff....

milo bloom 07-24-05 12:54 AM

I've been avoiding this moving for eight frakking years, and I finally start admitting to myself that nice big four disc set would convince me to see it.

Paramount, you just managed an incredible contortionist act, you stuck your foot in your mouth, then crammed your head up your own butt.

tonymontana313 07-24-05 01:19 AM

Either way, it's still going to be a lot better than the previous edition so I don't really care how many discs it is. I really don't think many of you guys are going to watch any of the special features more than once, so what's the big fuss?

emachine12 07-24-05 01:32 AM

Wow. Everyone jumps down Paramount's throat. The news bit states that FOX, LIGHTSTORM, AND Paramount decided to go with a three disc set. I can definitely see a nice documentary with some archived materials fitting on a single DVD.

Plus some of those materials can fit on the second disc even with the commentary tracks.

milo bloom 07-24-05 02:05 AM

Because historically, Paramount has one of the worst records for supplements among all the studios. Yes, many of their discs these days are quite nice, but they were pretty much the last studio to really dive into the special edition waters.
They're just the most logical target.

We are pissed off because you don't bring people news of a glorious 4-disc deluxe set of this film phenomenon, keep the people's dreams up high for four months, and then take away one of the discs. I was positively beaming when I first read at The Digital Bits about the 2- and 4-disc sets. A film with the mystique of Titanic definitely deserves the same kind of treatment as The Lord of the Rings.

Now perhaps our anger is slightly misdirected at Paramount specifically. The frustrating aspect is that no one as yet knows why this decision has been made, nor do we have any idea what we are going to be losing on that fourth disc. Paramount gets the brunt, though, because they handle distribution to Region 1, whereas Fox has it elsewhere, and the international version, as it is now painfully clear, is still that beautiful 4-disc deluxe set lovingly signed by James Cameron himself.

What also hurts is that the best Region 1 is apparently going to see is a new release called Special Edition. Elsewhere it's going to be Deluxe Collector's Edition. I ask you, which sounds more appropriate for what is touted as the "definitive" release of Titanic on DVD?

I still feel like :brickwl2:.

That is true...it is possible that all regions will be getting a 3-disc set, which, though slightly less "grand" than initially envisioned, would be acceptable. I have a big problem with the idea of other regions getting another disc of features just because Paramount sucks when it comes to SEs (as I've said in other threads, their SEs are generally a few fluffy featurettes, and maybe some deleted scenes and a commentary if one is lucky...they've rarely if ever been on par with the other studios when it comes to super special editions). Hopefully this will apply to all regions. A 3-hour documentary plus various small featurettes plus multiple commentaries would be fine by me, as long as there isn't another disc floating around the rest of the world with further excellent content.

Patrick Mirza 07-24-05 08:58 AM

I think everyone should just relax until the formal announcement comes in. I seriously doubt that the rest of the world may actually get more bonus features than us here in Region 1. In a few cases, I've gotten all agitated that a title was, say, a two-disc edition in another region. It's then turned out that they've had the same number of extras, only on an additional disc.

The point is, let's just wait before we look to lynch someone for shaving off a disc (then again, maybe the bitching may get the fourth disc put back on - you never know).

Either way, whether it's three or four discs, I think this is going to be one sweet collection.
