Wow! The SE makes the transfer of the previous version look like crap. The previous version looks pale and washed out in comparison.

I plan on watching this in Chinese tonight with English subtitles.

Question though - will the English subtitles just be the original English words, or will it "translate" the Chinese - I have a feeling if you translate the chinese into English, there will be some definite differences... especially on cultural references.
Possibly lost on previous page - anyone know the answer to this?

I don't want the aspect ratios of my films altered with a silly TV set ratio in mind. I want them to reflect the correct aspect ration. If it is 1.66:1 then that is what it should be.

I can't wait until they start altering old 1.37:1 ratio films to 1.78:1 for HD-DVD to keep from hearing complaints about the bars on the sides of the screen.

Is it even possible to alter a pre widescreen movie to 1.78:1 without stretching it(which in my mind is not worth watching if its streched)?

Sure, they made widescreen versions of Evil Dead and Ninja Scroll. Both were originally a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. With Evil Dead they simply matted it and cut off some of the top and bottom image..

...ditto for a 1970s 70mm, approx. 2.0:1 version of "Gone With The Wind" (1939)... ditto for a 1970s 70mm version of Disney's "Fantasia" (1940) (shown unmasked(!!!) in - eeek!!! - "stretch"mode, except for the spoken parts, which had vertical black bars on the sides of the screen)...

. . . . . .
