Since they're charging car prices, perhaps they can take trade-ins.

Well, look, Criterion's got some 260 releases to date. Take out the most recent releses, the OOP disks and box sets, and it's about 200 movies, let's say.

So at the most, you get 100 2-disk sets at the least you get 0 double disk sets, but 200 Criterion movies. Now, even if you get all of the barebones disks, there's still enough space for a few nice titles. Actually, if the 7500 dollar price tag from Amazon is to be trusted, and with quick but quasi-shady math, you actually wouldd get about 200 movies. My concern would be with the friggin customs. Imagine paying for that! If you don't live in the US, you could buy a home theatre in a box for the price of the custom charges.

It's definitely worth it, though... if you've got 5 grand to drop at one time. If I had the money, I'd get it.

You get triple points on the Amazon visa card, you would get $150 in gift certificates if you bought this.

How is it worth it? You can give me $5,250 and I'll be able to buy more Criterions at DVD Planet. Its a rip-off plain and simple.

Wouldn't anyone who'd be even remotely interested in this already have a lot of the discs in this "gift set"?

There are a lot of rich people out there, and I'm sure they give very rich Christmas presents sometimes. Or maybe just tell their butler to order me all of these "Criterion-thingies" after seeing how The Rock blows away their home theater or something.

Hell I don't know! If I had the money, I'd buy it. If I had a DVD store, I'd offer it.

After STL & A9 the price comes to $4,643. Also, you get triple points with an Amazon card for almost $140 in GC for future purchases. The big question is what titles are included?

Edit: There're some nice titles in the picture.

That seems both expensive and shady. I mean, who knows if they'll even include that movie where people eat poo.

The question is - seriously - how many of these movies are worth more than a first viewing... I'm not putting down the Criterion collection, but there are some real duds in their list ... "George Washington" ? "Armaggedon" ?

You get a bunch of Criterions, for 30% off list, with free shipping, without having to wait for titles to come in stock.

Although you can definitely do better by shopping around (DVDPlanet, etc.), I'd hardly call that expensive. And I don't understand what makes it 'shady' at all.

I mean shady in the sense that they already have it listed available for preorder, they know the number of discs included (208), so this makes me think they also know exactly which discs they'll be shipping. Yet, they don't list any of them. Instead, we get a picture of a bunch of criterion discs all piled up. How do I know they aren't sending me the 100 least expensive Criterions or the least popular or 100 copies of Armageddon?

I think we're all wondering just how many titles are in this 208 disc set. 50? 75? 100? 125?

From the pic, I can make out:

Spartacus (2 discs)
Monterry Pop Festival (3)
Tanner '88 (2)
John Cassavetes--Five Films (8!)
The Seventh Seal (1)
Mon Oncle (1)
Stage and Spectacle--Three Films by Jean Renior (3)
Naked Lunch (2)
Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto (1)
A Woman is a Woman (1)
Schizopolis (1)
Carl Thoedor Dreyer Special Edition Box Set (4)
A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman (4)
Orphic Trilogy (3)
Sullivan's Travels (1)
I Am Curious... (2)
Trouble in Paradise (1)
Taste of Cherry (1)
Branded to Kill (1)
Indiscretion of an American Wife/Terminal Station (1)

That's 20 titles and 43 discs, but I missed a few (obviously)

Now available for the first time, The Criterion Collection is proud to present its prestigious collection of films together in one gift set! Totaling 282 discs, The Criterion Collection Holiday 2004 Gift Set consists of all of their published DVDs through October 2004 (except for the out-of-print editions): that's 241 titles on 282 discs and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. This much sought after collection of films is the most significant archive of contemporary filmmaking available to the home viewer.
Crazy man, just crazy.
