The new cardboard cases dvd craze?

Why are movies like Day After Tomorrow and Van Hesling are now enclosed in cardboard cases along with the plastic dvd cases?

Isn't this a waste of paper?

What is the point of extra packaging?

The Day After Tomorrow's was actually pretty cool since it had one of those hologram panels on it. Other than that I don't really see the purpose of just the plain ones. So they don't put inserts inside to save money but now they'll put redundant slipcovers on? Hell, even Garfield: The Movie, got one.

I guess the idea is that it makes it special if it has a sleeve. Of course this isn't new. Although the sleeves can be plastic or cardboard, there are plenty of other DVDs with them (i.e. The Usual Suspects, Field of Dreams, Hellboy, Scarface, etc...)

I like them. Adds a little something extra that often looks neat. Even the ones that are the same as the cover are nice and glossy

I like actual slipcases. They are even better if they are strong and firm.

if i'm not mistaken, the slipcover for The Usual Suspects was not made of carboard but plastic.

i don't mind if they're plastic because it's more durable than cardboard which tends to wear off around the edges...

I love slipcovers, they are kind of pointless but have aesthetic value. Universal seems to do some of the best, but I.M.H.O. Fox is only doing them to cover up the shoddy dvds they are putting out lately...

I like the slipcovers. Plus, only the first print runs have these and it encourages the consumer to purchase it earlier.

I've become such an expert now at peeling off those stickers without leaving so much as a scratch. It takes about 10-15 minutes sometimes though.

i like them... i think they do make a nice touch like said before... at the video store i work at though, i have to argue with other employees not to throw them away... one of our associates, threw away the hellboy one and we have only sold 1 pv-ed copy of hellboy, whereas another store, which kept them on has sold a bunch........

Hate'em. Especially when they're just a copy of the DVD case artwork.

I guess they look nice, but personally I'd rather not b bothered with the extra clutter when I'm having a movie night.

Although I do admit, if they were all as nice as say the CC Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas package, I wouldn't mind.

I only like em' when they're the plastic see-through ones that add something to the art. Like the Alias s3, Usual Suspects, Fear and Fothing in Las Vegas and Twin Peaks ones.

I also don't mind the Disney ones, cause they open up and add to the information of the DVD.

The rest I could care less, they're just there to make you wanna buy it right away. Although I do find myself wishing I'd picked up the Manchurian Canidate slipcase and Gandi slipcase.

I like 'em. Many of the A-list titles coming out of HK also use them.

Day After Tomorrow got one just like the VHS version of Independence Day that had a hologram. Same director so maybe he pushed for it?

I'd rather not have them in the long run, but they do look nice (when not scratched or dinged up). I had to dig through the Van Helsing ones to find a decent cover yesterday. Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but the Underworld plastic case is nice too.

I like them. They have been doing it for a while as far as I can tell. Most recently Day After Tomorrow is really cool. And also Underworld EE is awesome. I do wish they were plastic though insted of cardboard.
