Ghost in the Shell (1996) Special Edition on Dec. 7th?

Amazon.com has currently listed a new DVD Release of the first Ghost in the Shell Movie for release on December 7th.
I couldn't find an announcement for this release anywhere.
Does anybody know the technical specs for this Edition or is it just a new release of the old DVD???

Kant 10-18-04 06:20 PM

Yes manga made a announcement! It can be found on www.animeondvd.com i think, no psecs though.

Tyler2310 10-19-04 02:19 AM

Do you have a link?
I searched animeondvd yesterday before I opened this thread and was just abled to find an announcement for the new GITS:Innocence DVD in December, not the original movie.

Kant 10-19-04 02:52 AM

Try a search on HTF...

Tyler2310 10-19-04 08:38 AM

Once again, just a thread about GITS:Innocence...

bluesparrow 10-19-04 12:49 PM

the GITS: Sonic Edition is a director's cut, I believe. It's longer than the previous release by several minutes.

EDIT: The previous release was 82 minutes according to imdb, and the Sonic Edition is 120 according to Amazon.

Frankly that seems a bit high so I don't know if it should be credited. Would've imagined that anime fans would scream bloody murder if GITS 1 had been cut by 28 minutes.

logboy 10-19-04 01:13 PM

as far as i know the GITS dvd is january 4th... 2005. so : it was due october, then december then shifted again. the new date should be firm cos its to come around the time of innocence and the GITS videogame, and just before the reissue of the manga in an uncensored form.

jedilah 10-25-04 07:03 AM

it's currently listed on amazon as having a january 11th release date...

is this edition really going to be an extended cut? or was that just a mis-translated press release (as i've read on another forum)?

also, is there any word on whether or not this will be the same transfer as the japanese remastered region 2 disc that came out earlier this year? does anyone own that version that can comment on the quality of that transfer (or subtitle quality)? i'm trying to decide if it's worth skipping over the japanese version in order to wait for a region 1 dvd whose release date keeps getting continually pushed back...

any thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

I believe the Ghost in the Shell R2 that was released earlier this year was just a re-release not a remaster. But I could be wrong. I know that release was dubtitled so the sub quality isn't that great.

Tyler2310 10-25-04 09:51 AM

I bought the Japanese Limited Edition earlier this year and found the transfer to be slightly inferior to the Manga Region 2 UK SE!

Kant 10-25-04 01:14 PM

Let's hope for a remaster and a dts track...that might get me to upgrade-

Kant 10-26-04 10:18 AM

Here is the press release:
http://www.bandai-ent.com/news/pr.cfm?id=86
But it has been moved to Jan. 05-

Damnit!!!

EDIT: Wait, that press release is from September :hscratch:

Tyler2310 10-26-04 05:02 PM

"The year will end with a new beginning when, on December 7th, Manga Entertainment releases a Special Edition DVD of the movie that started it all. “Ghost in the Shell,” which was the first anime video to ever reach number one on the Billboard chart back in 1996 and has since sold over 1 million DVD and VHS units in the United States alone, will be re-released with enhanced audio/visual and language options in a feature-packed set that is sure to please even the most die-hard fans."

Sure that is has been postponed until January?

eau 10-26-04 11:58 PM

I'm not surprised if Bandai has postponed this particular title. In fact, Bandai has done the same to a number of upcoming titles, partly due to their warehouse being flooded recently (literally).

Manga Ent is releasing this title for what it's worth and they've had a history of pushing back titles and sometimes never even releasing it.

Kant 11-09-04 05:20 PM

Ohhh Yeah, from davisdvd.com
Also look for the first Ghost in the Shell to be re-released on January 11th from Manga Entertainment as a new two-disc special edition. This set will include a newly remastered anamorphic digital transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 soundtracks and a boatload of new bonus materials.

Another double dip for me I think! Hope that the dts track is the original track.

SFranke 11-09-04 06:00 PM

Awesome news. I sold my old copy of GitS, but only for about half of the new release's $35 MSRP. Oh well.

In what language?

This is MANGA, I'm sure they'll some how screw the disc up, and the extras will suck.

Tyler2310 11-10-04 02:02 AM

I suspect that DD5.1 & DTS will be the (imho excellent) english Dub!
There is no DD5.1 Track of the original japanese language track to date.
Even the japanese SE released this spring did feature only a DD2.0Track!

And before the first DVD, there was no DD 5.1 track of the English dub either.

It's called remixing.

Tyler2310 11-10-04 12:29 PM

That's why I posted "to date"...

A lot of people were already disappointed that the japanese SE released this year had no 5.1Upmix.

eau 11-12-04 02:32 AM

I saw an article in the December issue of Anime Insider about the new SE. It says the SE will feature 5.1 audio in five languages, remastered video, trifold packaging and a poster, and a shit load of extras. Even the extras from the current version that carry over are remastered.

I'm not sure if it will actually include all five languages in 5.1 though.

I really don't hope that it has that many audio tracks since the video would suffer!
What did the cover look like?

eau 11-12-04 03:53 AM

There is no cover artwork. It's about half a page and talks about how secretive Manga is about the details of the DVD.

Not to sound overly negative, but that sounds like such BS. Like a very typical rumor.

It's hard to get shittier than the current disc though.

I'm mostly interested in the improved video and audio quality. If they live up to expectations, then I'll be happy.

That said, the second disc sounds like a collection of absolutely worthless fluff. "Character Dossiers," "Creator Biography," and "Director Biography" will be screens of text with a picture or two. The trailers are okay but fairly standard, and the DVD catalog and weblinks are typical Manga Ent. disc padding. That leaves "Digital Works" and "Production Report"--which could be good, but who knows? IIRC, there's also a featurette on the existing GITS DVD, so I don't see that we're really improving on the extras all that much.

Once again, though, the A/V quality matters the most, and that's what will determine if I redip.

I feel the same way. I it has two dts tracks, I am fearing that the video will suffer.
The extras doesn't sound that great.-But if picture and sound is much improved I will have to get this!

eau 11-19-04 10:36 PM

At 82 minutes (according to dvdempire), they may not have to sacrifice the video bitrate since the 2 DTS tracks can be half bit rate anyway.

Since this is MANGA, I'm more worried about them screwing up the release like they did to the GITS:SAC volumes so far (volume 3 seems to be screwed up as well) than having them intentionally compromising between video and audio transfers.

SFranke 11-19-04 10:46 PM

I was pleased with Ninja Scroll 10th Anniversary, and I believe I will be pleased with this release.

Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition had ES and EX tracks in addition to four commentaries. Disc One of that set has almost twice as much feature as Ghost in the Shell has. I'm not worried about space on this release.

I just hope that they don't add as much ugly edge enhancement as they have to the SAC volumes.

Putting two DTS tracks on the same disc is never a good idea. It eats the hell out of the bit-rate.

Kant 11-22-04 05:18 AM

Here are the specs. The retail price seems a little high, but maybe that is because of the poster.
From www.davisdvd.com
Ghost in the Shell
Some more details have just arrived for Manga Entertainment's upcoming Ghost in the Shell: Special Edition.
