2 things on Donnie Darko DC

First, has there been any talk of a R1 release? Is there a date? Second, does anyone know if the R2 release is in anamorphic video? My player cannot play anamorphic PAL DVD's, and this will determine if I import. Thanks.

Adrenaline 10-13-04 06:43 PM

The new R2 release is anamorphic, I thought I remember reading somewhere that it's coming in December in R1.

So, it looks like we need to pickup the current disc to be complete?

Is this running time for the movie, or for the movie plus all the special features? Either way it seems wrong.

253 Minutes would be 4 hours, 13 minutes and about twice as long the original cut.

Can anyone who has seen the DC (theatrically) confirm a running time?

joshualane 11-01-04 08:54 AM

It's probably the combined running time for Disc 1 and Disc 2... not the run time for just the movie.

RobCA 11-01-04 10:19 AM

This is GREAT news. Thanks for posting it!

I'll definitely be buying this set... and keeping the current disc.

Guess I'll need to pick up the current disc as well . . . again! This will be the third time I have bought it. Wild Things still has the lead with four purchases though.

I love this movie!

I saw the DC theatrically, and it wasn't too much longer than the original. I don't think it broke two hours, much less 250 minutes.

costanza 11-01-04 12:15 PM

why is there a commentary with kevin smith? is it "from mallrats fame" kevin smith? i'm all for it if it is him, i just didn't know he was involved with the pic.

He wasn't involved with the pic, but he was a fan of the movie, and is apparently now friends with the director. He serves as sort of a moderator, but anyone knowing Smith should expect his eccentric attitude and humor to show through. I have the UK set, and I found the commentary rather enjoyable. They hit on some of the symbolism and foreshadowing. Smith adds the right amount of entertainment and never steps on any toes.

Is that all the features there will be? The R2 seems to have more stuff, like
20 Deleted & Extended Scenes with optional commentary by Richard Kelly
Production diary (with commentary)
B-Roll Footage
Cast and Crew Interviews
Cast and Crew Filmographies
"They Made Me Do It" featurette
"They Made Me Do It Too" featurette
"They Made Me Do It" gallery
Cunning Visions Infomercials
Two Trailers
Five TV Spots
Mad World music video
...will those be on R1?

Anyone know a cheap place to get the R2?
Also,is this the cover...
http://i17.ebayimg.com/02/i/02/b4/db/2f_1_b.JPG
because all sites have a pic of Jake on cover?

Hm, so I stand corrected. Time flies when you're having fun.

slop101 11-01-04 05:37 PM

I just watched it yesterday (perfect Holloween movie) and it's only about 2 hr. 2 min. before the credits roll.

The commentary with Kelly and Kevin Smith (Clerks) is pretty good and recorded quite recently - but they mention something offhand about region 2, which leads me to think that this was an R2 exclusive, but I guess not, since the Fox announcement.

Cornelius1047 11-01-04 06:07 PM

It will be mine. Oh yes. It will... be mine.

Although, it would suck to have some of the features from the Region 2 release left off. What's up with that?

K

jmj713 11-01-04 06:54 PM

Aren't some of those R2 feature already on the currect R1 edition of Donnie Darko?

RicP 11-01-04 08:50 PM

The R2 cover is lenticular and holograms between Jake and Frank. It's a slipcase with a regular R2 Amaray style case inside.

I have the R2 edition and I see no need to get the R1 when it comes out, this is close to a perfect edition of this classic film. :)

Jackskeleton 11-01-04 09:08 PM

I have the R2 disc, and I'll still get the R1 when it's released for lending out and since fox = me. ;)

Caliking 11-01-04 11:43 PM

i cant wait. loved the first cut...this one is sooooooooo much better!

Matthew Chmiel 11-01-04 11:45 PM

Richard Kelly said none of the "theatrical cut" extras will be on the new special edition. So it's no shock that a lot of the extras from the R2 edition are not on this edition since most were already on the original R1 DVD.

If only FOX could've pulled a DreamWorks, similar to Almost Famous. Include both cuts of the film and all the extras in one (nice) huge set.

I'm still keeping my original DVD, but still. I'd rather have just one big set and not two small sets. :)

But, there are a lot of the old edition extras on this R2 special edition...i checked. deleted scenes, music video, the promo spots, cunning featurette...

Yeah, the R2 seems to be specifically geared towards the UK, because as was said before, the commentary mentions "R2" and "R1" and talks alot about the UK reaction. The "They Made Me Do It Too" documentary is about the UK cult fan base (and quite condescending to American filmgoers). This set has some of the extras from the original R1 release (like the deleted scenes) I guess because they didn't have them before over there. I won't be buying this R1 Director's Cut. I'll keep the R2 and original R1 versions.

Oh, and the picture you see of Jake on all the websites for the R2 is the cover on the amaray case inside the sleeve with lenticular cover that you posted above. And I got mine for about 20 bucks from CD-Wow.

ReduxGuy 11-18-04 12:14 PM

Well, the official artwork, courtesy of DVD Answers, is up.

Truthfully, it's intriguing, but not really my style.

I like that it is very different looking from the original release, but it looks liek a quick hack job IMO. Proportionally it doesn't look right, but that is probably nitpicking. Still picking it up regardless.

C_Fletch 11-18-04 07:55 PM

Don't care for that cover one bit. :(
They should have used the R2 cover.

Rivero 11-19-04 01:26 AM

Silly cover. As for the DC it is intriguing and some of the new scenes are great, but I don't like the overexplanation and overemphasis on the time travel aspect of the story here. Darko is less relatable in this version and more a clinically disturbed wacko and I miss the rabbit's line "I'm sorry" in the dark theatre which foreshadowed later events.

Jackskeleton 11-19-04 01:42 AM

wow, I'm glad I picked up the R2 as that white cover sucks.

Maybe the original spec for the running time is to allow you to go set fire to a self-help guru's house.

_Mat 11-20-04 12:41 PM

I have only one question : where is gone the DTS track from the r2 relase ?????

Now it's an hard choice : get a pal speed up dts release or the ntsc dolby one ...........

hummm .....

Matthew Chmiel 11-20-04 03:14 PM

The running time of 253 minutes includes the feature plus bonus materials. ;)

Seriously, does a DTS track really matter for a low budget film like Donnie Darko? Sure, the Director's Cut got a remixed soundtrack, but still... I'd take NTSC and no DTS over PAL speed-up and DTS.

kovacs01 11-20-04 03:57 PM

whats the difference between this release and the CE Tin? I have that one and am considering making it a triple dip (also had the original R1 release). i know that with the tin, the DTS track is only for german. what else?

Matthew Chmiel 11-20-04 04:51 PM

The CE Tin included the following three features currently not available in R1: 15 Cast & Crew Interviews, B-Roll footage, and the entire film score (either in Dolby Digital 5.1 or PCM).

The interview footage and the B-Roll footage was on the R2 DC DVD (along with the original R2 DVD); but no word if they will make it on the R1 DC DVD.

And as we all know, that entire film score in DD 5.1/PCM will probably not show up anywhere else. ;)

Giles 11-30-04 01:07 PM

I just watched the Region 2 UK Edition last night (movie only) and was floored by the 5.1 DTS track (wow, I mean wow - when Frank's disembodied voice reverbed in the entire room, that was beyond impressive).

Maybe we will have to wait for a r3 or r2 JAP release for a NTSC DTS .............
I'm definitely not picking up the r1!

Did anyone else find the extras disc on the R2 release to be... shitty?
The meat of this disc are the featurettes, but they end up being all English productions. I don't care what some whiney beer guzzling British wanker thinks about the movie. The editing and lighting direction are terrible, like, backyard production terrible. I'm sure Richard Kelly would be dissapointed with this. The tone and quality doesn't match the film at all.
On top of that the production diary audio is out of whack and just unwatchable, cause you don't know what they're saying.
I really am dissapointed with the extras disc. Luckily I'm a big enough fan of the movie to hold on to it just for the first disc.

Dude, I'm in the UK right now, visiting my British in-laws.
What I'm trying to say is that I'm allowed to say bad things about British people because I'm married to one. :)

Seriously though, you have no idea how those featurettes taint the movie. It's depressing.

Well, I can imagine. There is one of the British featurettes on the Region 1 ("They Made Me Do It Too: The Cult of Donnie Darko"), where there are interviews with fans and British tabloid critics, but I didn't make it all the way through to the end when watching as it was pretty dull.

When Momentum announced the specs for the Region 2 Director's Cut, I looked at the extras, thought "meh" and decided to wait for the Region 1. Sadly, there's not much of interest on the Region 1 either, but the best thing is the "#1 Fan" mockumentary by the winner of the fan competition. Now that did hold my interest. Damn, that was funny. The guy's not British either :D
