Keep the old and use it as a CD. ;)
|
i guess, i'll give it up.
but why couldn't they put a nice DTS track on the new one? why oh why? |
That way they can sell you the 25th anniversary version in 3 years? ;)

Can you really see a big difference in picture quality on a regular TV? I'm not sure if I want to double-dip on this one just yet.
|
Originally posted by rasalas Yeah, because the Dolby Digital 5.1 track on this one is just awful. -rolleyes- what will BB have this disk for later this month, any guesses? |

Still, I've already put the old release in a 2-disc case, so I think I'm committed either way. :) RE price - BB's regular price will probably be 16.99, so a 14.99 "sale" price would be my guess. That should be CC's regular price so hopefully they'll have it on sale for 12.99... |

Well I just re-watched some chapters from the old version and I think I've decided to stick with that one. If they had offered anything new, or even released what's there split up on two discs that probably would've put me over the edge. (kinda like the Field of Dreams re-release which I bought, although the pic quality was a bigger improvement too)
The thing is (pun intended) I don't see myself upgrading my TV anytime soon, and by the time I do we'll likely have another re-release, either with more extras and/or on HD-DVD. |
I only have a 27" display, but it has the anamorphic squeeze mode, so for me the new disc was a no-brainer.
|
One of the few titles I intend to double dip on. Carpenter and Russell were a great team in their day; I agree the old version looks pretty good to me as well, but I want the best versions of the movies they made together and I do plan on getting a bigscreen come tax time.

Originally posted by Snowmaker What is that? In a nutshell, when you're watching a widescreen movie on a 4:3 TV it'll make the picture smoother, with greater detail. It's the best way to view DVDs without going to a widescreen TV. |
Please, can anybody confirm if it has an Spanish (Espaņol) audio track?
I have heard also about Francais instead. What one of both is? And the extras (audiocommentary too) are subtitled? Thanks. |
The audio is English 5.1 and French 2.0 only.
Subs are English, French and Spanish. The Documentary is subtitled as well but not the commentary. |
I'm wondering if I should pick this up. I already have the CE non-anamorphic release but the fact that its anamorphic tickles me.
I'll still keep my current disc for the same reasons I kept my Alien 20th anniversary disc...for the isolated score. |
what exactly is this isolated score? just the music played to a blank screen?
|
The disc has a Spanish 5.1 track. I said this on the first page, remember? ;)
|

I believe the score was a separate audio track on the documentary.
 on new packaging IMO, they upgrade the picture but put it in a crappy digipak. Should've stuck with the original artwork and keepcase. |
Originally posted by CephalicCarnage Well I don't have this disc, but the isolated score on Starship Troopers plays with the movie, but with ONLY the score playing and no other sounds. I'll compare this movie tonight to the old release, I won't be able to post screenshots, but I have a decent display/dvd player combo, so I can give some feedback on the PQ upgrade. :D -JR |
Thanks to the tip from all of you folks, I stopped by my local Borders and sure enough, they had a bunch of them out for sale. I picked one up and used the 10% coupon that I also found via this site. Having not owned this movie before and wanting it because I am a fan of most of the John Carpenter films, I was sure glad that they rereleased it (and anamorphic too!).
|
I'm still confused about the audio tracks avalaible in the anamorphic release:
Daniel L wrote: The disc has a Spanish 5.1 track. I said this on the first page, remember? The audio is English 5.1 and French 2.0 only. There might be 2 different versions. The Spanish 5.1 on the U.S. disc and French 2.0 for the Canadian market.

Originally posted by Tyler_Durden Actually, it played as background music on one of the menu screens. I'm really glad for this new release because my old disc simply stopped playing. (Nothing, not even my computers, can read it now.) |
Originally posted by dhmac Actually, the score was an alternate track to the "Making Of" documentary called "Terror Takes Shape". |
Which ever it is... I can never have enough Carpenter!
|
Originally posted by rasalas But Tyler's point remains valid. Once you choose the score option under the language menu for the documentary, the music just starts playing while the menu remains displayed. The documentary doesn't actually play with the isolated-score audio option. DJ |
djtoell is correct.
|
You're right, djtoell. I thought Tyler was wrong initially and so checked my disc before posting. But I was fooled by the menu music and didn't wait long enough to hear the loop. I thought I had listened to it long ago while the documentary played, which is why I double-checked it to begin with. Thanks for the correction.

Picked this up at Borders a few days ago; I was asked for my e-mail addy so I could start receiving coupons online and I mentioned to the lady that had it not been for online I wouldn't have known the Borders chain broke the street date on this....she about had a cow :)
Anyway, I watched it last night. Colors seem to be more vivid than my old copy. I can understand why they changed the cover artwork so as not to confuse the buyer as to which version is which, but I'm not real crazy about the digipak either. I've noticed a few titles changing the artwork from original poster to something different of late, Desperado also comes to mind. I kind of LIKE my DVDs having the original poster artwork as their covers....... |
Yeah, sorry for the causing all that confusion, guys. Having already sold my disc, I had no way of performing a bullshit check on myself, so apparently my memory played tricks on me.
|
Got mine today. No insert, lousy case, DVD was hard to get out, Disc has minor discoloration swirls on playing surface.
|
Dang you must have got a bad copy... mine was easy to get out, disc was in good shape, cover was better than expected and no insert. ;)
|
The little pocket in the front flap had a piece of cardboard with a security device in mine, no insert.
|
just take insert from old and put in new and yay!!...that's what the pocket is there for...they must have known!!
