Some people are addicted to crack, for me its DVD's

I can't help myself, or control myself if I go into a store that carries them, I have to buy something. In fact, last time I walked into walmart I walked out with "The Bear". I tried to convince myself that....."It's Fullscreen....you don't want it". But then the other side told me, "Yes, but its $3.99 you must have precious. Precious needs to come home. Precious needs to go in DVD player."

Thank God deepdiscoundvd hasn't done any 20% discounts lately, otherwise I would be going ape right now. Buying etherthing including their damn domain name.

Does anyone else have this problem, with buying? It's like crack or gambling for some people. While I have plenty of money to purchase these items, I still think I should have better will power

Loc Nar 10-06-04 06:50 PM

It's okay man. The Bear is a great flick, and the disc of it I got from Wal-Mart is wide and full screen. Check the back of your box. It's all good. See, you don't really have a problem.

I'm still buying close to 10 a week....hows that?-wink-

Woah, that hole in the middle of the dvd's must feel awfully violated.

Jack, please stick to the topic and leave out the personal discussions.

DVDs are my daddy.

nemein 10-07-04 08:27 AM

Personally I found subscribing to Netflix really helped. I have constant stream of new DVDs coming in so I get my "fix" but it doesn't cost as much and I don't have to worry about storing them [which has become a big problem] ;) Sure I don't have them around to watch anytime I want but a lot of them are things I wouldn't want to watch again (rented them to check them out and decided not to buy them) plus I still have a fairly sizable collection to choose from. Overall though my DVD buying has significantly dropped off w/ the lack of deals and the fact I pretty much own every title that is already out that I want so it's just new stuff that I'm picking up.

freudguy 10-07-04 09:09 AM

Netflix helped me quite a bit, especially when it comes to Criterion DVD's. I watch them first to see if I like them if it's something I haven't seen before. I probably would have bought Flesh for Frankenstein & Blood for Dracula if I couldnt get them from Netflix. I watched them and now I don't care if they go out of print

Galileo01 10-07-04 09:50 AM

Netflix helps me decide what DVDs to buy. If I watch something I really like I add it to my wish list. It's helped me save tons of money on DVDs I rented with the premise that I was going to buy it and wound up not liking it. :)

I don't blame myself for being addicted to DVD. I blame everyone on this forum for what they've done to me. :)

We have all been through this. You have to accept that it is impossible to buy every DVD. Just learn some patience and self control.

Eve Brown 10-07-04 11:30 PM

I know the feeling I get dvds at the 2 for 20 sale working to an average of $10 plus tax. Many blind buys of stuff and have ended up with about 50 unwatched movies. Lucky I have resisted a month on the sale dvds. The only things I got were a couple tv box sets since i had gift codes for amazon. But I know I have a dvd problem. Expect for sets there is no rush since in a few months most titles will show up in a sale. It hurts when you paid $20 for it. After stumbling across this board, I realized I never need to pay more then $15 for a regular dvd movie. Now if only columbia house would accept my online applications since I hate the phone.

drjay 10-07-04 11:55 PM

The worst is getting a region-free player and discovering how many more options you've got. Sheesh. All my money down the tubes -ohbfrank-.

GMLSKIS 10-08-04 12:08 AM

It's easy to be addicted to buying DVD's because of the ongoing fresh supply. Every week 200 - 300 new DVD's come out, odds are you're going to at least like and want at least one of those.

This website is based on all of us having the same addiction. It is better than drugs and cheaper.

I agree with this statement. This site definitely increased my collection and addiction exponentially. Although I've personally realised recently to take responsibility and accountability for my spending decisions.

I've always had a 'collecting' bug since I was a child which started with baseball cards. It's a pattern of behaviour that is very hard to break.

I, also in the midst of the worst of my dvd-spending mania, found comfort in this site because I was surrounded by people like me. And it really is comforting to say that it's cheaper and more satisfying than drugs. But that really should be a comparison that makes you realise you have a problem.

In the past 6 months my DVD spending has dropped dramatically, the last 20% off Deep Discount DVD sale was my last splurge. The more that I look at my 600 DVD collection with a different state-of-mind about it, I see a lot of more DVDs that I really can live without. I've been a bargain hunter even with the huge collection I have, but I still feel a sense of guilt when I look at them these days. I've started weeding them out, trading them in to stores for credit and purchasing what I really want with the credit (instead of paying cash).

The more I cut down on my collection to the essential of what I keep and try to keep that same mind set to only buy my favorite movies/TV shows (Star Wars, Seinfeld, Fanny & Alexander, Buffy Season 7) the happier I'll be. Netflix has also been great to watch before I even would consider buying.

Okay, but that's my DVD story, yours may be similar or not and I don't assume or criticise anyone else because I've been in the same situation so it would be hypocritical to be judgmental.

Dabaomb 10-08-04 12:54 AM

I'm addicted to DVDs too.

I've always had a collecting bug too. Sports cards, comics, clothes and now DVDs.

I have over 835 DVDs and I've only been collecting since June 2002.

Thankfully Blockbuster has that deal through 11/1/04 where they are giving a minimum of $8 trade-in credit for any DVD. Check this thread in the Bargains Forum for more details.

So far, there are 12 that I definitely wanna get rid of, but I grabbed about 40 more that I'm thinking of getting rid of as well. I hope to get rid of at least 50 of my DVDs which is $400 in trade-in credit :D

Which was dalvins addiction to dvd's before some folks turned it into an addiction to crack in the thread title? The topic at hand was already debunked from the get go.

In either case everyone should realize tha t you can't own everything. Stick to what you like and what you will watch or else you will start stock piling unwarpped dvds that will never get watched.

Investing your money into this as some means of profit (Say buying criterions or OOP's) is a waste. You are better off playing the stocks since who knows what that next big collectable item will be.

I don't think this site is about everyone who has an addiction to dvd's. More so it's a collectable itch for it. Like any hobby, the user will dictate the amount or level of control he can pull off. Some folks just do not have any sort of control and that becomes the main issue. An uncontrollable addiction to dvd's is no more healthier then an addiction to crack. Sure you aren't fucking up your body, but you sure as hell are screwing up your income and you may be ignoring other aspects. Family, friends, electric and phone bills that are past due.

If you have any sort of real addiction where you can't help but buy something that you may not need, you really should get some sort of help. Have it be just talking to someone or just trying to keep yourself in some sort of control.

Any addiction can lead to a problem.

Scott716 10-08-04 08:06 AM

I totally agree with a couple of the above posters on just buy what you like...be honest with yourself because you will most likely regret it later if you try and buy every deal that comes along.
Luckily for me I learned early on in my collection, about the 100 mark , and just looked at them and decided if I wasn't going to watch it more then once or twice to get rid of them. I'm still addicted to it but more patient on waitng for releases that really mean something to me. Now I look at my collection and it's a reflection of me, my tastes and memories, and there isn't a one I couldn't pop in and enjoy at any time.
So still buying but now prouder of my collection then if I had had a ton of them.

Actually I am addicted to movies and television.
The collection has grown a bit since the pictures were taken.
You can probably add a few more hundred to the DVDs

darmok 10-08-04 02:42 PM

every time i go to bestbuy i have to buy some movie; if i don't i feel guilty. when we go to target, kmart, or some other megastore with a video section, i'd always casually say to my gf, "i'll be right back, i gotta check out something", and right there she'd give me this "uhboy" look. ha ha.
