None of the Hitchcocks or Marx Bros films have inserts. Seems like the new films are getting them though. I guess its mostly the older catalog titles that aren't getting the inserts.

Put simply, the difference between the 2-disc special 10th anniversary edition and the "limited edition" is with the limited edition you pay about $20 more for a tiny book, a music CD and a box. Both contain the same 2-disc movie set.

How superior is the new transfer comparing to the old snapper version?

None of the new warner boxes have inserts, period.
Thus, their seperate 2-disc sets are starting to drop inserts, also. But this actually may only be the ones that are also in box sets (like Goodfellas).

There are also some extras on the R1 that are NOT on the R2, and vice-versa.

I also wanted to ask; don't you all think it's kind of weird for a fairly major release like this to not even have one review even after it's been released?

Yes... they keep saying the manufacturer didn't send any copies to them, so they can't review it... SO, BUY ONE!

slop101,

The prison warden is preventing any reviews at this time. However, he is expected to lift this ban in a weeks.

The PQ on the R1 disc is MUCH BETTER than the R2 disc.

You'd think they'd be the same transfer but they're not, the R1 is noticeably sharper and clearer with much better blacks. R2 looks at times almost laserdisc like with a much softer picture.

So go for R2 if you have to have dts, but R1 if you want the best PQ possible.
Yeah, I noticed the great picture quality.

Too bad the Untouchables SE doesn't have a better transfer.

A few observations about the 2-disc set:

1) The transfer is noticably better than the previous DVD. Not night-and-day, but if you have a large display, you will see the difference. I liken it to Superbits vs. the regular edition.

2) A glaring continuity error has been digitally corrected. I won't go into heavy detail for the two of you out there who still haven't seen this movie, but let's just say it involves a bullet wound late in the film. I noticed the change immediately, and not surprisingly, Darabont addresses it in his commentary. He said it's driven him nutz for 10 years and he's thrilled it's finally been fixed.

3) The trailer is 4x3 on this DVD, whereas it was 16x9 on the previous release. Bizarre.

I haven't gotten to Disc 2 yet, but I thought I'd offer my thoughts on the first disc for those who are still on the fence about picking up this set.

Hmmm looks like just the 2 disc for me, if they added a bonus dvd to the LE I would be all over it, but just a seperate book and cd don't do anything for me.

Can you go into more detail about this (using spoiler tags)? Thanks.

With STL and the A2 discount it comes out to $26.62 shipped, I don't mind paying ~$7 more for a book, soundtrack and a nicer looking box.

The LE? I just got it today via Amazon... or are you referring to one without the book? I just thought the deluxe and LE one existed.

No, that rumor started who preordered in Canada got e-mails saying that it would be unavailable.

The reason is that Warner apparently does not have the rights to distribute the BFI book in Canada. So the LE release will be available in the U.S. only.

Spoiler:
When Warden Norton shoots himself, the closeup shows the barrel of the gun pointed at the middle of his chin. After he fires the gun, the bullet wound is on the right side of his chin. The new DVD has corrected this digitally and the bullet wound is now right in the center where he pointed the gun.

Isn't that from Pulp Fiction? Vincent (John Travolta) to Butch (Bruce Willis). Not applicable in a Shawshank thread, unless someone says the same line in SR & I missed it.

I wanted the LE. also, since they did not provide an isolated score, my fave feature, the bonus ST was welcome. dammit....just give me isolated music tracks!

I like the painted cover. Looks like a old movie poster.

I would think that the difference is that the "Shawshank Redemption le" is in French, and the other one isn't, no?
